MANUKAU COUNTY COUNCIL.

b Monthly Meeting. )'e monthly meeting of the ukau County Council was htld in Auckland yesterday, the members present being Councillors H K Mackerzic, chairman, A D Bell, A Muir, J Pearaon, J C Bryant and the clerk, Mr A Bell. OTAU ROAD Cr Bell stated that the Wairoa Road Board bad been waited upon on the previous day in connection with the toad leading out from Mr Chambers' properly near Otsu. The Board had voted £7 10s for improving work, and he had stated that he would endeavour to get the County to vote an additional sum.— It was decided also to vote £1 10s for ths work. INCONSISTENCY OP UOVEKNMENT The matter of the nationality oi the Council employees was discussed as tha result of a letter rectived from the Raglan County Council, who suggested that only married tusn or those not eligible for military service be employed on county works. It was stated by the foreman that there was only one employee who was not born in the Empire, and he thsught he w*s naturalised. tA member said thßt it was to e deprecated that although the lovernment refused to accept the services uMJalmations for service with the Expeditionary Forces, yet it would engage them to replace men who wera going to fight for the Empire. At Manurewa there were about twenty men on railway works who were eaid to be of foreign nationality. The foreman was instructed to prepare a report as to tbe men at present employed on county works, and it waa decided to support the principle advocatsd by the Raglan County's resolution. KAWA KAWA WHARF

Mr Cashmoro waited upon tbe Council asking its assistance in connection with obtaining tbe erection of a wharf at h.awa Kawa. He ■aid be could get assistance from the aettiera to the extent of £l6O, but at ieaat £2OO was wanted.

l'he chairman suggested that the promoter abould endeavour to get tbe consent of tbe ratepayers to the raising ot a loan for the whole amount.

A BOON TO MOTORISTS

Cr A Muir informed the that be had interviewed tar W Walters eelative to the alteration of the bad corner on the Great South Koad at Glenora Park, and Mr Waltera had stated that he would agree to an exchange of land without compensation, so long as the land was fenced. This would mean, said Cr Muir, that the road would now go straight through, and was an improvement which bad been looked forward to by all users of the road. It was decided that the road be ■urveyed, and the clerk was inatructed to communicate the thanks of the county to Mr Walters for his generous action in the matter. ANNUAL MEETING Through a misunderstanding the annual meeting of the Maoukau County Council waa not held in November, as it ahould have been. A letter waa written by the clerk to ?he Department on the matter, and the reply received atrted that permission could be given tor the meeting to be held in January.—lt was decided tu ask the necessary permission to holg the meeting on January 11th. FOREMAN'S REPORT The County foreman reported that the County plant was in the Fapakura riding at present making .alterations to the Main South road 'through the Manurewa township. Three hundred yards of metal from Keardon's. Urookby, were required lor new work that was proposed to be done. Such should be gone oa with at once, aa the country was not too good for carting over in the rainy season. G Thompson was progressing favourably with the cartirg of the Bpawls for the Government grant at Takanini. He would toon be finished and the County would be enabled to go on wtb the job while the plant was in the district. Cr Muir suggested that the decking of the Wiri bridge be timed and sanded and the band mils lentghened and approach at* tendsd to; also the lengthening of some old Btone culverts at Wiri. The foreman added that CJr Bell had authorised him to have a mile of road widened, raised, and regraded on Ardmore Hat towards Bull's corner. Six hundred yards or so of metal would be recessary. That would be in addition to seven hundred yards of iretal for maintenance irom Talbot's pit at Ardmore, and three hundred yards to come from Thorpe's pit at Wairoa. As instructed by the Council at us last meeting he had let the contract fur reforming road at Kawa Kawa Hay to J Baton, Clevedon, who* had promised to push the work on at once. Specifications bad been prepared and were to band.
