PAINTER'S BANKRUPTCY.
Meeting of Creditors. The first meeting ot creditors in the bankrupt estate ct W Wardleworth, of Pukekohe, painter, waß held in Auckland on Friday last. Debts to unsecured creditors totalled £402. there being a d:ficiency of about £270. The official assignee, Mr W S Fisher, said tbat be was informed that when debtor was made bank rupt he was asked ti attend a private meeting of creditors and was requested to file his petition. He did not do so as be did not nave tbe money, thus incurring an expenditure of £2O to be met by the creditors. One of the creditors said that the debtor bar! not taken the trouble to attend a private meeting of creditors. Debtor said tbat tbe reason tor his absence from the meeting wis tbat he was misinformed as to the date of the meeting by bis solicitor. Mr Fisher said that the solicitor should hove been present to corroborate bis statement. In the course of his examination debtor stated tbat be did nothing to evade his creditus. He bought a piano, which coßt £69 fot the children, and of this amount £l4 was still owing. This statement caued one of tbe creditors to remark that he himself had to be satisfied with one which cost much less than that. Wardleworth further stated that be Jiad had
increased expenses during the past few months, chiefly in connection with the marriage of his daughter. The official assignee said that he had been advised that the stock-in-trade was worth only £45. Mr A G Graham, who represented Meesrs Brisoe and Co, stated that he intended to oppose the bankrupt's discbarge to the fullest extent. The meeting was adjourned sine die.
