WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 8, 1915 RECRUITS WANTED.
"Are You Eligible? If so, you are needed!" are the main and appropriate lines of a pamphlet issued this week by the Pukekohe District Patriotic Executive in an appeal for recruits, and the same should he taken to heart by all those who have no reasonable excuse to otter why they should not be in the fighting line, instead of remaining behind m New Zealand, it is possible that ere long coercive measures to ensure service may be resorted tj, and in that case the ureeent Btirkers will cut a very poor figure before the people of the Dominion. "Come before your are fetched" is a the cry being made in England from the troops in the trenches, and a similar appeal may well be instituted to the young men of New Zealand from the Dominion's gallant representatives in the Dardanelles. We feel confident that tbe people throughout the Empire, while realising that a possible utlimate resort to compulsion must be kept in view by the responsible statesmen, desire that voluntary enlistment shall first be given every chance of proving itself equal to the emergency. For a year we have managed to find the men required not only without the threat of compulsion, but even without the use of systematic persuasion. The response to the Empire's appeal, in fact, has been spontaneous. What is needed now is a special effort to bring home to the hesitating ones the urgency of the need, and we have no fear that the results will not be adequate.
