PUKEKOHE'S NEW VICAR.
Rev. J. A. Cowie. Tfce Kev. J. P. Cnwie, now Vicar at Paeroa, who has effected an exchange ci livings with the Rev. F. U. Dobson, Vicar at Fukekohr, is the second son of the late Biehop Cowie, Primate of New Zealand. He was educated at the Church of England Grammar School, Auckland, and-was fat a brief term at King's College, London. After eorae years at sea, Mr Cowie decided to read fur Holy Orders, and came ashore in 189?, during which year he studied under the direction of his father. In 1896 tte entered St John's College, Auckland, nn the Marsh Foundation, and wai admitted to the diaconate in September the same year, being attached to St Matthew's Pari-h, Auckland, until his departure to England at the 2nd of . the same year, when he accompanied the Primate as Lhapiin to the Lambeth Conference. In 1897 Mr Cowie served a curacy at St Anne's Church, Uoxtun, and gained a useful insight into slum life in London. Desiring to obtain more time for study, Mr Cowie availed himself ot an offer from the late Bishop ot Brisbane and took up his residence at the Brisbane Theological College under the wardenship of the lata Archdeacon David, formerly vice-Principal of Leeds Clergy School. Here he resided for two years, serving at the same time a suburban curse;. He was admitted to the Priesthood on St Petet's Day, 1899, in the Brisbane Cathedral. At the Auckland Diocesan Synod in 1898 it was resolved t3 provide a secretary to the late Primate, and at the close ot that year, upon his appointment to that office, Mr Cowie returned to the Auckland Diocese, and continued to ssist his father until the time of the Bishop's death in 1902. In August, 1901, Mr Cowie wss appointed Virar of Paeroa. During his residence in that parish the places where services are held have increased from two to seven, the Vicarage debt has been considerably reduced, «the freehold of the Paeroa church site has been acquired, a new and more central Vicarage site has been secured, a Parish Hall has been built in Paeroa, new churches have been erected at Karangahake and Hikutaid, and a Sunday School building also has been erected at Karangahake, in addition to which the property adjoining the Karangahake churcn on the north side has been acquired.
