GALLIPOLI.
CLIMATIC CONDITIONS
Tho following notes on the climate at Gallipoli have been prepared by Mr. H. A. Hunt, Commonwealth Meteorologist :—Gallipoli is in a latitude of 40 deg., N, and is situated in the Mediterranean climatic province. Its climate is akin to that of Spain, and Italy, and also closely resembles that of the southern coast of Australia. Tho average annual temperature is 58 deg. I<\, htat of Melbourne being 58.3 deg. F., that of Melbourne being 58.3 deg. available, but the city of Constantinople is also situated at sea level in the 6ame latitude, and onl£ 120 miles to the east, so that the figures for the capital will closely represent those at Gallipoli. The chief characteristic* of the Mediterranean climate are the warm, dry summers, and cool, wet winters. The extremes of temperature are not large owing to the coastal situations of the countries concerned. A comparison of the average temperatures during the various seasons, with those of Melbourne will be of interest. January in Turkey corresponds with July in Victoria, owing to the change of hemisphere.
