PUBLISHED MONDAYS, WEDNESDAYS AND FRIDAYS.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1915 LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The Official Organ of : The Franklin County Council. The Pukekohe Borough Council. The Tuakau Town Board. The Karaka Road Board. The Pokeno Road Board. *

"We nothing extenuate, nor »et down auaht in malice."

The Rev. 8. Findley, who for 14 years was in clia'ge of the Pukekohe Presbyterian Charge, will conduct the evening service at the Pukekohe Presbyterian Church on Sunday evening next.

Cr ilubbard was on Wednesday appointed deputy-Mayor of Pukekohe, in place of Mr J. A. Comtie, who recently resigned from the Council. Cm Motion and Barter were nominated tor the office, but both declined the appointment. As an addition to postal facilities in Pukekohe, Cr Motion suggested at the Borough Council meeting dh Wednesday night that tbe Postal Department should be asked to erect a ktter box at the Railway Station. The proposal was adopted, and the Town Clerk was instructed to communicate with the Postmaster. . '**

. Owing to Wednesday next being th; date of the coronation of the successful Lower Waikato Queen tbe Franklin County Council will meet on Tuesday for its ordinary monthly meeting and will then hold on Wednesday only a brief sitting for the necessary statutory annua I meeting at which the chairman for the ensuing year has to be elected. When in Puktkohe yesterday the Prime Minister, Mr Massey, mentioned that uncertainty still prevailed as to Ha proposed visit to England owing to the unsettled war conditiotis. He remarked, however, that although the trip would be a pleasure in one way he did not look forward to it as actually a holiday, because it meant crossing America in winter time, and a stiy of only three or four weeks in England.

At the meeting of the Pukekohe Borough Council on Wednesday Or. Eoadley urged the necessity of tak,ing steps to compel the local butchers to keep meat free from dust and flies. The samp, he said, could be effected by wire screens being attached to the open windows and doors. Further he advocated that the butchers should be forced to use clean white paper instead of printed newspaper as the article in which to wrap meat. The Mayor pointed out that a by-law already existed as to unused white paper being necessary for packing purposes and it was decided to enforce that by-law and to refer the other point raised by Cr Eoadley to the By-Laws Committee.

" Smoking permitted at and after 8.30 p m." is the new regulation by the Pukekohe Borough Council in place of the previous resolution prohibiting smoking until after 10 pm The change was brought about on Wednesday on the motion of Cr Barter despite a protest from Gr Patterson that smoking would detract from the dignity of Council meetings. The Mayor explained that although personally he was not a smoker he recognised that the majority of Councillors desired to smoke and he offered no objection, but he would ask that on rising to speak Councillors should for the nonce dispense with their pipes, cigars, or cigarettes. Similarly, added the Mayor, " I would ask that Councillors should not speak with lollies in their mouths," a remark that caused hearty laughter at the expense of Cr. Patterson, who instead of smoking had been indulging in lollies and had been speaking whilst so doing. Cr. Patterson good temperedly accepted the rebuke and throwing a packet of lollies k on the table invited Councillors to partake of its contents. Further merriment was caused by a suggestion from Cr Eoadiey that ppitoons in the forms of small boxes of sawdust should be provided for himself and other smokers as he objected to any member expectorating on tho floor. Top Dresser for Hire, tor broadcasting lime, slag, bonedust and grass seed, 5 - per day from FRANK PERKINS & Co.. Pukekohe.—Advt. Rubbei Stamps ol all description may be ordered at the Office of the "Pukekohe Times." Cail ind select from our illustrated catalogue.

Being told yesterday that the Pukekohe Borough Council was short of fund?, Mr Massey, the Prime Minister, laughingly remarked thht he had never yet met a local body that was not "hardop." At the Pukekohe Juvenile- Court yesterday ihe ooy convicted a fortnight ago for foiling cheques was committed by Mr F. V. Fiazer, S.M., to an Industrial School, the order to be suspended during good behaviour at hia home.

At the monthly meeting of the Pukekohe Boroiijh Council on Wednesday night, it was decided, on 'the proposal of Cr Uoadl.y, that the Town Cle.k should kaep a register of the names of all soldiers leaving Pukekuhe for the front.

The Art Union in connection with the Pukekohe Gun Club Shoot to-morrow will be dtaw.i to-morrow (Satutday) on the ground at 1 p.m. instead of on November 25th as previously announced. Holders of books of tickets are accoidingly requested to rtturn the same to the secretary, Mr Daysh, by noon to-morrow.

A final reminder is given to intending exhibitors at the Pukekohe Summer Flower Show, to be held in the Premier Hall next Tuesday, that entries close tomorrow (Saturday) night witn the hon. secretary, Mr J. T. Stembridge.' The show forms part of the Carnival Queen proceeds and in a double sense is therefore deserving at support bitb from horticultmists and the public as a body.

Elaborate arrangements have been made for the crowning on Wednesday next in Pukekohe of the successful candidate for the Lower Waikato Carnival Queen contest. The day wil be observed as a whole holiday, in Pukekohe. A grand procession will "be formed at noon and will proceed to the new Showground, whfre a full afternoon's enjoyment ot a varied nature will be provided, and in the evening tn.entertainment will take place in the Premier Hall, "the main item of which will be a repetition of the .coronation ceremony.

Numerous and varied attractions are offered at tbe evening sports meeting to 03 held to-night (Friday) in the Pukekohe Horsa Bazaar. To-morrow (Saturday) will tee the close of the poll for the Lower Waikato Queen Carnival and in the afternoon a shooting competition, •rganieed by the Pukekohe Gun Club, is to be carried out, whilst in tbe evening a miniatute fair will be in progress in King treet. The Town Band will discourse music, and "the D rk Town Brigade" will give a series of entertainment, an auction of various articles will be in progress, and a variety of side-abows will cater for public amusemlnt. Ai already stated, to-morrow's effort will form the final opportunity of affording support to tbe Pukekohe Queen, but it should be added that.the Carnival Tea Rooms will remain open for another week for the direct benefit of the Queen ot the South.
