■ PATKIOTIC SOCIAL. K The Patriotic Social that eventuU%d last Friday was a big success $ every particular, The social was divided into four courses and the appetites of the Urge and well-conducted audience for amusement etc., must have been thoroughly grutitied. Ibe concert portion was opened by our accomplished pianist, Miss McNauhgton with an overture. The chairman'! (Mr J. Flanagan) remarks were abort and pithy, and then Mr Yardley opened the vocal portion and had to submit to a recall. An instrumental duet by Messrs Kt id and Wall received quite an ovation and. bad to be repeated. The vocal efforts generally were of a very high order, ■nd these were supplied by* Messrs Yardley, Wallis, Thompson and Mies Dean. Miss O'Shea danced a ■Sailoi's Hornpipe, a Hub land Fling and gave a fine display of Club Swinging. Ihe instrumental aoloißts, Mr Be id and Mr Phil Will, are musicians of skill and ability. The second course consisted of a refreshment lor the ioner-man handed round by members of the Patriotic Committee and prepared by our indefatigable steward, Mr Swan. The third course consisted of competition'. Ladieß' and gent's nail driving competitions. These were judged by Messrs Peoples and Fanagan, and were well contest! d. The winners were: Gent's first, Mr Parker; second, Mr Quinn. Ladies' tirtt, Miss G. Coiaey; second, Mies Mcpherson. The Children's Competition was productive of much merriment, and Jul ably conducted by Misses erhard and Barnes. The winners were Misi D. Appleby and Master Lodge. The gent's Hat Trimming, engineered by Misses Bernard and Barnes, and judged bv Mesdames Wall and Dickson, was undoubtedly the "reme de la creme" of the competitions, and the winner of the first prize, Mr He id, proved himself a veritable artist, Mr Hath, who scored second place, manipulated his dimming-) like ;i practised milliner. Mention mist also te made oi Mr Peoples' effort, which was highly commended and rec> ivsd a special piize. The first prize hat wps sold by Mr James Wall to Mr J. KlanaKan for 23p. It »;n again put up lor ■ale niul was knocked down to Mr Ri id for 225. Tie prizes submitted by Mr Flanagan were purchased by Mr Wall tor Bs, and this brought this portion of the social to a dote. Dancing then claimed the attertion of its devotees unlil about 1,30. Gcod music was supplied by the Messrs Cossey and the ii atrunientalists already mentioned. The Mcretaiy, Mr Fyfe, thanked the entertainers on behalf of the committee, and a hearty vUe of thanks was carried by acclamation. The following who helped so well and who are not mentioned ia the preceding notes, viz., Miss A. Hamilton, Miss Jessie Blake and Mr Quinn, who gave the secretary much assistance, Mr Glasson and also Messrs Hamilton and l'ocman, who were M.C's in charge of the daree, arc worthy of tharks. Krizes for competition were donated uMr J. Wall. •
