The Pukekohe Borough Council meets next Wednesday evening for its usual monthly meeting. Tenders for the erection of a house labour only) at Pukekohe are invited per the medium of our advertising columns, and plans and specifications may be seen at the office of this paper. This week's Carnival fixtures in Pukekohe include Musical, Vocal and Literary Competitions to be held on Thursday evening, Evening Sports on Friday, and a Gun Club Shoot on Saturday. Entries are coming forward in promising fashion for the summer Show of the Pukekohe Horticultural Society to be held in the Premier Ball on Tuesday of next week although the closing date for the same is not until Saturday next. A reminder is given of the children's soiree and entertainment which takes place in the Premier Hall, Pukekohe, to-morrow evening, commencing at 5.30 p.m. A most interesting programme will be gone through by the young folks, and, as in the past, a pleasant evening is assured.
The usual monthly meeting of the Pukekohe District High School Committee is to be held this evening when, in consequence of his forthcoming departure for Paeroa, as announced in our last issue, the Rev. F. B. Dobson will tender his resignation both as Chairman and member of the Committee.
The prevalence of rains is causing delay in the diggiog of crops ot new potatoes. Giowers of "spuds,' as also dairy farmers, are eagerly looking forward to a spell of sunshine as a sequel to the recent moist conditions. Week-end holiday makers have certainly had a run of bad luck as regards weather conditions for, according to a correspondent, yesterday was the fourteenth consecutive Sunday on which rain had fallen.
We have received a lengthly communication from a correspondent signing himself "Mohawk" protesting against the sporting aspect of the Queen Carnival undertakings. As the subject, however, has been fully threshed out in Auckland and the views of extremists do not appear to be shared by the greater body of the public we refrain from publishing "Mohawk's" letter, being of opinion that no good service would accrue from a controversy that, if entered upon, would undoubtedly cause dissension and thereby injure the cause for which all are working. Previous to their departure from Pukekohe to enter the Trentham Training Camp, Messrs. Harry Talbot and Bert Mitchell, both of Pukekohe, were farewelled by the Pukekohe Committee appointed for the purpose of farewelling and by several friends at the Pukekohe Hotel on Friday night. The gathering was presided over by Mr C. K. Lawrie, who took the opportunity of presenting to each of the departing soldiers on behalf of the Pukekohe public a handsome tobacco pouch and pipe. Mr Mitchell was further handed a wristlet watch and a tobacco pouch by the chairman, on behalf of bis late employees, Mr E. Cnjm and Mr M. Mclntyre respectiyejy. Mr Lawrie eulogised the guests for their bravery in leaving our shores, to light the battles qf the British Empire. Messrs. Barter, A. Grigor, I. Motion and J. J. Coady also made speeches, and Messrs. Mitchell and lalbftt ded. Top Dresser for Hire, lor broadcasting lime, slag, bonedust and grass seed, 5 - per day from FRANK PERKINS & Co., Pukekohe.—Advt.
