PAPAKURA ROAD BOARD.
Monthly Meeting. The monthly meeting ol the Papakura Koad Boaid was held on Monday, tee members present being Messrs E. D. McLennar, chairman, H. Moody, J. J. Trimble, Jos. Breddock and D. A. Keid, clerk. WALLACE ROAD. Mr J. Hunter acknowledged tbe Board's letter, and stated that the matter of the cleaning of the drain on his property will receive attention. Mr Moody said if finances allowed be would like to see about 20 chains of the road formed. Assistance bad been given by Messrs Wallace aod J. H. Morga-, and it was pleasant to ste settlers who were willing 10 assist the Board io this nranner. They bad cleared and grubbed their frontages in preparation for the forming and if other settlers would do likewise the Board would form tbe road from end to end. It was decided to write to certain interested settlers asking them to contribute lowaros the ccst of the formation and the clearance of toe road.
PROPOSED TAKANINI-CLEVE-DON KOAD. A letter was received from Messrs Edmund Mahony and Son, solicitors for Mr C. K. Young, stating tbe terms under which toe latter was agreeable to jibe road to the Takaoioi railway station going through and along the boundary of bis fsrm. Ihe terms were that compensation be given at the rate of £45 per' acre for the land taken; the construction of <i new bore and windmill on his farm with a guaranteed permanent water supply; and the erection ef a new fence on the new road boundary. Members thought the price was excessive, and it was decided to refer the matter to the Wairoa Road Board. If the Board went on with the matter it was thought that the land should be surveyed, the best route taaen, and then acquired under the Public Works Act.
"if the people will not meet us, • h±n we will have to adopt this course," said the chairman. VALUAIION SUMMAKY. The Valuation Department forwarded a summary of the valuation of tbe land unaer tbe jurisdiction ot tbe fapakura Road Board, which was ss follows:—Capital value, £361,200; unimproved value, £251,456; value of improvements, £107,745. UNPAID RATES.
It was decided to place various rate notices in the hands of the solicitors for collection. Mr Trimble said the settlers were going against their own interests by being backward in respect to ths payment of rates, and the subsidy was being lost. The chairman stated that next year the rates would all have to be mi before the 31st March. BROOKBY-CLEVEDON ROAD. Mr Moody mentioned that the contractor tor the widening of tbe BroOkby Clevedon road, Mr 11. A. Simpson, had met with an accident and was unable to proceed with bis contract.
The chairman said tbe accident was regrettable, and members generally expressed sympathy with Mr Simpson. Ihe matter of dealing with the contract was left in tbe hands of Mr Breddock.; RANFURLY. ROAD. The condition ot the Ranturly road was discussed, and members stated there were worse roads in tbe district. An area loan waa suggested, and it was explained that a petition should be presented by the ratepayers. There were holders on the road who were not yet on the road, and in tbe event of a ballot being taken these could not vote. Tbe matter was left in the bands of Mr Moody.
AN ENLISTMENT.
Mr Gerald A. Jackson notified that bis brother, Mr R. H. Jackeon, conbul ting engineer to the Board, bad joined the colours and tbat he had been appointed as hiß attorney.— Received. TENDERS. Six tenders were received fur work on tbe Alfriaton-Ardmore road, but acceptance was deferred for a week, when tbe chairman, Mr Moody and the clerk will deal with them.
