WAIKATO RIVER BOARD.

Engineer's Inspection.

A visit of inspection was paid by the engineer cf the Waikato River Board, Mr Kennedy, who travelled from Napier for. the purpose, on Monday. He reported that the results of works being carried out were quite up to bis expectation, and were highly successful, thoroughly justifying the mocey already spent, the engineer considered that the pile-driver at Maiora Bay should from now on be woiked continuously, as the top groynes are acting splendidly and the heavy accumulation of sand is continually shitting further down the rivfr. He stated that the large amount of land being cut off from the tiver by the reclamation should considerably assist towards the cost of the work, and upon bis advice the Board intends to obtain rontrol ot these portions for reserves as sion as possible. The Board will thus be considering the interests of the ratepayers in a doable sense, the works being of (treat benefit and the land extremely valuable. The enigneer's estimate of the work still to be completed was as follows:—Kaitangata to wharf. 60 chains of heavy close piling, £1200: From Kaitangata to Tuakau bridgr, £600; from Tuakau bridge to Mercer, about £2000; total cost, £3BOO. It is anticipated that of this amount £llOO will be grant money, £IOOO will be available from the Bank on a bill-of-iale over the Board's plant, and £6OO worth of debentures can be issued without appeal to the ratepayers. As a result of the engineer's recommendation it is understood that the Board will work the piledriver doutle shift, so that as much ot the Maiora Bay work may be completed before the Christmas vacation. It is worth recording that every chain of piling, completed in the Bay assists considerably in keeping the sand on the move towards the sea.

The engineer was of opinion that directly the above works were completed a marvellous difference would be noticed, especially at Mercer.
