PROVING IT.
Mr. John Burns was once visit-r.g a workhouse which was being repaired, and meeting one of the workmen he him where Irs boss was. - Tin the boss,'' answered the man, curtly. Then seeing that Mr. Burns was evidently doubtful of the truth of his assertion, he added, "Don't you believe it:- Then I'll show you whether I'm boss or not. Turning to a labourer who happened to p<T>s by at the moment he shouted with a!! the air of a general commanding an army, " 'Ere, Bill, go and get your money you're sacked. There, he concluded, turning triumphantly t-o the astonished Mr. Burns. " Do you believe n:e nr.-"'" AGAIN AND AGAIN*. A well-known lawyer is response* for the following story. "There was a man," he said, "who applied for e position in a wholesale house. HLs appearance wasn't prepossessing, and references were demanded. After some hesitation, he gave the name of a driver m the firm's employ. The driver, he thought, would vouch for him. A clerk sought out the driver, and asked him if the applicant was honest. "Honest?" said the driver, "why liis honesty's been proved again and again. To mv knowledge he's been arrested nine times lor stealing and every time lie ha? been acquitted." The ultimate end of education is to promote morality and refinement by teaching men to discipline themselves, and by leading see tb« highest.—Huxler.
