In view of Monday next being Labour Day, and in order to allow our staff to have the full advantage ot the public holiday, the ordinary Monday issue of the "FukeKohe Timea" will be suspended on thsit date.
The usual lortnigbtly sitting of the Pukekohe Magistrate's Court takes place tu-morrow (Thursday). The Pukekohe .Borough Council holds its usual monthly meeting this (Wednesdy) evening.
The annual concert in aid of the funds of the Pukekohe Convent is to be held on Thursday, November 4tb, in the Premier Hall. Among the wounded returning trom Gallipoli on board the Tofua, due to arrive next week, are Lieut. Hatt (Pukekohe), Private Robt. Stacley Ohlson (Onewhero), Sergeant Hoy Schofield (Pukekohe) aod Prviate W. T. K. Williams (Waiuku). Messrs Roulston Bros, three-year-old thoroughbred gelding by Marble Arch—Pretoria has been naimd J 'Honour Bright." He has giv<n a Rood account of himsilf in home gallops, and on Saturday last he was conveyed to Mr Frank Mac minnemau's racing stables at Ellerslie for the purpose of being put into training.
As the result of an appeal made by Mr F. Perkin?, through the colamr.9 of this pap:r on Friday last, for sandbags for "our boya" in the trenches, a cartload of bags has been received from Mr W. Howe, of Patumahoe, and 1800 bags from Mr John Schlaepfer, ot the Ostrich Farm.
Although the telegraph wires have in the Pukekohe district with--Bto3d the gales ot the last few days, communication both north and south has been affected through lines having tallen and s.me delay accordingly has aiisen in the transmission ot telegrams. Repairs, however, where necessary, have been promptly instituted. The arrest on a warrant issued in 11J12 was made in Pukekohe on Saturday last by Constables Thorrell and Taylor of a resident of Maungatswhiri Valley in nspect of a charge of having failed to comply with an order made at Nelson to maintain bis wife. The defendant appeared at the Auckland Police Court on Monday acd was remanded for a week, pending information from Nelson. A highly attractive programme has been arranged for the entertainment to be given by the Pukekohe Girl Scouts in the Premier Hall to-morrow (Thursday) evening. Vocal and instrumental music, a fairy operett?, a display of ambulance work, and a spectacular poster march will be included among the items. The proceeds a e to be devoted to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. Messrs J. T. Stembridge and Co. report as follows :-At our weekly sale on Friday last we had a good attendance. Bidding was spirited for most lines. Pigs came forward in small numbers and were short of requirements. In poultry, we had full pens, and all sold at satisfactory rates. Duck 9 fetched from Is 7d to 2s; hens, 2s to 3s; roosters, poor Is 7d, better quality 2s 6d to 4s. Vegetables were in abort supply. Of new potatoes only small sampWs came forward. Sundries sold at usual rates. In connection with the Qurei Csrnival campaign in Pukekohe a "Paddy's Market" is to be insti:uted, the sample rcom3 in Lower King street having been kindly lent for Ihe purpose by Mrs McGovern. Wares of all descriptions, together with produ e, etc., will be offered for sale, various
ladies of tbe Committee having agreed to set as raleswomen. The market will be open daily for about three weeks as trcm Monday next, and goods will also be auctioned every Wednesday afternoon and Friday evening, with Mr J. T. Stembndge acting in an
hon orßry capacity as auctioneer.
The Committee appeal to the residents of the diat ict for gifts of anything that can be converted into cash.
At a meeting held in the Pukekohe Hotel on Monday evening
last, Colons! Cosgrove, attending, it was decided to form the Frank-
lin County into a Scout district, with Mr C. K. Lanrie as district commandant, and Mr Alan P. Day as district secretary. Scout Master McArthur, of the Pukekohe Troop, was appointed Column Chief Scout
Master, and an executive com mittee, consisting of the following, was appointed, viz., Messrs C. K.
Lawrie, chairman, I. Motion, H. G. Lysnar, A. Grignr, F. Perkins and J. F. Deane, with two representatives from Waiuku to be appointed later. Drs C. H. Wake and A. Bronte were appointed medical examiners.
Preliminary work has been started in the construction for Mr William Roulston of a siding and loading platform at the Pukekohe railway station on land adjacent to Manukau road he (Mr Roulston) recently leased from the Railway Department. The cost of the construction will be about £4OO. Mr Roulston has also made arrangements with the Department to take over an adjoining small piece of land secured from Messrs Buckland and Sons, and by that means the existing road will be removed from 50 feet to 60 feet further south of Manukau road, tie in addition has leased from the Railway Department the triangular piece of ground that abuts on his existing leases, and by the lemoval of tbe road has been able to square the section, thus giving better facilities for building purposes. Mr Koulson has had on order lor some time one of the latest Avery weighbridges and this should have been delivered to Pukekohe before now. but owing to the War Office commandeering iron works and foundries at Home a delay has arisen in delivery. From latest advices, however, the weighbridge should arrive at Pukekohe early in the New Year and will be be erected on part of the property together with large grain and produce shads. With the completion of the Elding, sheds and weighbridge the district will boast ot having one of the most up-to-date plants in New Zealand for the handling of manures and farmers' produce. Such work will cause a considerable sum of money being spent locally and it is an indication of Mr Rouleton's faith in tbe stability and soundness ot the district.

Colitel Cosrgovc, V.D., Dominion Chief Scout Commissioner, who was yesterday in Pukekohe inspecting the Boy Scouts, is the possessor of quite a number of medals, included in which are those for the following, viz.: Volunteer decoration, the Boer War, the lorg service, Scout Order of Merit, for saving life (for saving a boy from drowning at Kaiapoi, Canterbury, iu_ December, 1913) Jand a bronze cross (Borne crder) fur aavirg life (the same occurrence). Be is also the proud possessor of tbe silver wolf, a special distinction in tbe scout world, la addition to the late Lord Roberts, Crlonel Cosgiove is the only person in the world who Las attained that honoured mark ot merit.
Trie result of the examination in theory of music bpld in Auckland in June last, for the Trinity College of Music, have just been issued and in the senior division (maximum marks 100, ronours 80, p.-s3 60). Miss Mary E. Costelln, a pupil at the Pukekohe Convent, has tin distinction of heading the list of the successful cicdidatrs with 76 marks. Other successes are Misa Mary Weir, with 100 marks out of a possible 100, in the Jum&r Dmsio", together with Miss Agnes Rogers 86 marks, Miss Kathleen Lindsay, 85 marks, bo'.h wih honours; Misa VJna Old 73 marks, and Miss D?sma Old, 60 marks; and in the Preparatory Division, Miss Elsie Jeffraes 93 mark, Master Desmond Clarke 85 marks, Miss Ailca Howe 81 mark?, Master Lrs-iie Roadhy 68 marks, Miss Ida Howe 63 maks, and Mies
Mary Pulman 60 marks. All the foregoing wsre presented fur examination by the Pukekohe Convent, and the success met with is testimony to the excellent musical training imparted at that institution. Mm Cic ly M. Webb, a pupil ot Mi s L. Townson, was ah? a successful candidate in tbe Senior Division, scoring 63 marks.
