KARAKA ROAD BOARD.

Monthly Meeting. The monthly rnc.'ting of the Kuraka ltoad Board was held at Karaka on Saturday, Mr J. Batty presiding. The other members —present were Messrs J. Schlaepter, J. McPherson and the clerk, Mr H. E. (ilaißon. PEIIIIONTO COUNTY. Cr J. Henry, in connection with the petition asking that the Karaka dis'rice be constituted a separate licing, wrote advising the Board thit Hi! A letter was received from the Piime Minister thanking the Board for it* invitation to undertake the %ce<iing of the Hjngaia bridge, and statirg that he would be pleased to comply with the request wnen he could conveniently arrange a date. Young wrote etiting that he was projecting the opening of a stone quarry at Paerata, and he asked the Board to take a stated quantity at 6b 6d per yard at crusher. QUEEN OF THE SOUTH. 1 The secretary of the Pukekohe | Carnival Executive acknowledged , the receipt ot the chairman's letter , re the Queen Curnival, and stated , that he was sorry t> learn that the , chairman of the Road Board would not accspt a position on ths Puke- , kohe Executive tor the Southern | Queen on the grounds that he was , interesting himself in the candidature of the "Soldiers' Queen." He , (the writer) pointed out that the ilea of the Carnival was to create healthy rivalry between the sup- , porters of the various candidates, , a and with this idea in view the , W Executive in Auckland bad decided , to confine the o'ganisation of the , Soldiers' Queen ent rely to the city , and aubaurbi and to thus leave the , Pukekohe district entirely to the ' Queen of the South. He further , stated that it was proposed to N start a \ local Queen competition in the • district, with probably candidates ( from Papakura, Papatoetor, Bom- , bay, Pukekohe, T'uakau and Waiuku, the funds so raised to be , devoted for votes fur «.he Southern i Queen. ] The cbiarman stated that he was placed in an awkward position as ( he was a strong supporter of the | Soldiers' Queen, but he bud called a meeting for Monday (to-day), , and if the settlers were in support of the Queen of the South then as , chairman of the Road Board he would sink his own feelings. A GENEROUS OFFER. While on the subject of tbe , Wounded Soldiers' Fund, Mr Batty | ■aid he would like to say that he , thought the Board should make a' donation. He felt eo strongly ou the matter that he would subsidise anything donated by the Board to ; the extent of ten shillings in the pound. It was decided that the matter of a donation by the Board be considered at the settler's meeting. SUGGESTED NEW KOAD. It was decided that the chairman should wait upon the chairman of the Franklin County Cmncil relative to a prcpossd new Pderata station road. It was stated that the undertaking was too big for the Board a|one, pnd it was thought the | County Council should assist in the matter. SPaWLING CONTRACT. It wbh resolved to call terders for spawling 1000 yauls of metal in the quarry at Paerata on the Drurv-Waiuku road. RABBIT PEST. The matter of the increase cf rabbits in tie lutrkt was touched upon by the chairman, and he stated that something lurther would have to be done to eradicate the pest, The mat er wis discussed and it, was suggested that all farmers should he asked to cut the scrub on their properties, aud to poison as mu'h as possible.
