A very enjoyable dane?, tendered by the ladies and men of the district as a farewell to Mr Steve Markbam, and Messrs Harry and. Charlie Gray, who are leaving shortly lor the Treotharu training camp, was held on the evening of Thursday, <h:> 7ih iost. tbe night waa anything but favourable a large crowd put in an appearance, many friends and |oyal enthutiists coming from Kama Rama and Uunua to show their appreciation of tbe young men's action in enlisting. During the course of the evening Mr M. Whelan, in a stirring address, made feeling reference to the starling worth and courage of all the gallant young fellows who were prepared. to risk everything for the Empire's sake. On behalf of those present, and others, be presented Mr Markham with a set of military brushes and the brothers Gray each with a wallet. The recipients suitably acknowledged tbe gifts. Mr Maurice Keane, who departed with the Second Reinforcements, arrived back last week, being invalided home through'illness., He was with tbe New Zealanders in the Dardaoell.B fighting soon after the liral landing, and saw Beven weeks ol trench warfare before being "knocked out."
