QUEEN CARNIVAL SCHEME
Local Queens Probable. A meeting of the Iccal Committee appointed in connection with tbe Queen Carnival arrangements was held in tbe i'ukekdie Borough Council Chambers yesterday afternoon, Protestor Cardstone, organiser for the Auckland Provinc, being in atterdauc.
A-suggestion hy Professor Cardstone that as an accessory to the main Queen competition, viz., Queen of the South, there should also be a series of local Queen competitions tor the north a rn end of the Lower Waikato met with decided favour. The organiser's idea was that healthy rivalry fur the honour of claiming the succesful local Qjeen would fise between the different centres to the mateiial ultimate advantage of the Queen of the South candidate. In the discussion that ensued it was thought, that six local Queens could be allotted, as follows, viz. : One each for Pukekohe with Buckland; Papakura with Drury; Waiuku with Aka Aka, Patumahoe and Mauku, Papatoetoe; Tuakau with Mercer; and Bombay and district. Professor Cardstone undertook to visit the localities concerned so as it possible to put the project into operation, and the Committee adjourned until Monday afternoon next when, it Professor Cardstone's report is favourable, steps will be taken to put the undertaking into working order tor the borough. To avoid any possible cause ot friction Professor Cardstone counselled that t'ne selection of a local Queen should be msde not by vote but by recourse to the system of "drawing out of the hat" one name out of all natiipa included therein of ladi.s acting on the local committees.
