CLEVEDON.

WAIKOA KOAD BOARD. MONTHLY MEETING. 'lha monthly meeting of the Wairoa Road Board was held at Clevedon on Monday, the members present being: Messrs A. D. Bell, chairman, J. McConaughy, J. Luke, H. Walsh, W. Duder and the clerk, Mr A. E. Baile.r. A DANGEROUS PRACTICE. A letter was received drawing attention ta shooting parties who camped in the Board's cart shPd and lighted fires in it It was stated that tbe procedure was riskv. the shed being attached to the stables. Members agreed with the writer that the Board's property was endangered, and it was resolved to put up notices and to instruct the police relative to to tbe matter. JOINT RANGER. The Papakura Town Board relative to the Board's letter suggesting a joint ranger, and stating that it was willing to join in employing a man, would like some particulars as to terms before committing itself. Four applications had been received for the position of ranger, and the chairman stated that he and the clerk had considered these. One had been selected, the appointment to be weekly. Owing to complaints received it was decided to dispense with the man's services, and to leave tbe matter in the chairman's hands. Regarding the joint ranger, tbe matter was well discussed, and :t was decided that a deputation from the Board should attend the next meeting of the Papakura Road Board. I Mr Walsh remarked that if they could only erect a pound on the Board's own puperty and lay tbe water on in conjunction with tbe Papakura lown Board the position would be much better. OTAU DOMAIN. The Department of Lands and Survey forwarded a copy of an Order-in-Council appointing the Wairoa Road Board a Domain Board to have control of tbe Otau Domain. The Department also advised that the first meeting Bhould be held on 11th October. A meeting of tbe Board was subsequently held. CHANGL OF OWNERSHIP. Messrs Neumegen and Mowlem, notified the Board that Mr John Kobertson had disposed of bis property to Mr Charles Holder, wbo had taken up possession. They asked that tbe necessary alterathn to the rolls be made, A DANGEROUS BRIDGE. Mr J. Kosa wrote relative to the bad statt of the road leading to Mr R. McCullough's and his owu property, and asked that the road be graded. He also drew attention to the dangerous state of the bridge opposite McCullough's. His horse, he said, had fallen on it whilst drawing a cart containing 6001bs of milk, but fortunately had regained his feet. It was decided to instruct A. Bradbury to open up the road through his property, leading to Messrs Ross and McCullough's property, at once. It was also resolved to put six 3-teet concrete pipes in this road and also to do about three chains of formation work. NESS VALE ESTATE. The Ness Vale Estate Company forwarded a plan of the Company's property, denoting the sections sold and also asking that it be relieved of paying rates on these sections.— Keceived. EGRESS BARRED. Mr J. W. Gilchrist, Papakura, wrote regarding the action of a settler who had plouged the length of Pruden's boundary with a disc plough and had, he alleged, thus blocked his (Mr Gilchrist's) egress. He asked the Board to direct that instructions be given to harrow the line, and stated that the part he was going to do to allow him to get out would be charged to the Board. It was decided that tbe matter of harrowing be left in tbe bands of Mr McConaugby, and to notify Mr S. Cosgrove to clear his portion of tbe road frontage of gorse in preparation for ploughing. KEFRESENTATION. The Department of Internal Afliairs wrote as follows:—"I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt if the Board's letter of 17th inst., respecting the desire of the Board to alter the representation of tbe Wairoa riding on the Manukau County Council. In reply, I am directed by the Minister to Btate that the Governor has no power under section 22 of the Counties Act, 1908, to deal with the question of representation. To enable two members to be elected for that riding it will be necessary for the Board ta proceed by way of special order. In this connection I am to draw your attention to the section which provides that such a Special Order shall come into full force only at a general election of the Council. With reference to your query as to section 69 (c) it is considered that a fresh election must be held lor the Wairoa riding."— Received, OTAU SECTIONS. Mr J. H. Alexander waited upon the Board relative to Ihe lease of sections in the Otau Settlement, but it was stated that all had been taken up, aud the Board had no more for disposal.

A ROAD WANTED. Messrs Barker and Caddington waited upon the Board with to the luggestcd devist'on of Barker's road. It was explained that neither saltier had a road to bis property and that (hey were at present only using a right-of-way. Mr Marker offered to give land for the road in exchange for the portion which wouid be closed. On the n.otion of Mr Walsh, it was resolved that the matter be deferred until next meeting, olher settlers interested to be consulted during the i tenro. M ATA IT AI ROAD. Mr Luke reported relative to the deviation of the Maitaitni road at Quinn's and stated that the matter bad been allowed 10 stand over pending Mr Qainn getting expert information as to the value of the land proposed to be given. CONDOLENCE. The secretary's action was confirmed in having forwarded, on behalf of the Boaid, a letter of sympathy to Mr J. E. Wilson, Clavedon in connection with £the death of bia sjn, Sergeant D. Wikon, who bad died of wounds received at Gallipoli. MOUNTAIN KOAD. Mr Qumnon asked the Board why it had stopped the "thirds" on hia road and thus stopped the work. A member: It wasn't the expenditure of the "thirds" that was objected to, but the fact that the work was not authorised by the Board. If you approach the Board is the matter it would not doubtless object. ✓ Mr Quinnon: All I want is a road. It's you're own fault; none of jou ever come up and look at the road. On the motion of the chairman it was decided to authorise Mr Quinnon to remove slips on the road leading to Hancock's property, and also to authorise the expenditure of the "thirds." GENERAL. The Manukau County Council forwarded a cheque for £154 9s 6d in settlement of the Board's account. The Public Works Department stated that the sum ot £l9 13s 9d bad been placed to the Board's credit on account of Mataitai to Hauraki Plains road (£5) and Clevedon to Brookby (£l4 13s 9d), ACCOUNTS. Ttia following accounts were passed for paymentP, Mataga £7 2s lOd, R. W. Hollingsworth £2 3e 9d, T. Paterson £9 14s 81, J. Graham £3 12?, A. E. Bailey £l3 Os 3d, J. McKnight and Co. £3 Os 6d, C. Watkhs £lO, H. S. Munro 13s tic), J. Alexander £lO 4s, Percy Smith £5 2s 6d, Farmers' Union Trading Association 16s Ba, P. C. Waters £1 16', E. Peat 10s. On Saturday evening last quite the largest- smoke concert yet held in tbe district eventuated, the tunc tion being in honour of ten of the local "boys" who are leaving for the fiont. A number of exceptionally good concert i.ems were rendered during the evening, among those contributing being Messrs P. Furley, W. Daw, W. Bell, A. Bell, W. Johnston and A. JohnsUD. A special feature of the musical programme was the comic singing of Mr T. Bickerton, and the pianoforte items ot Mr W. Purcell, both of Auckland, iHr C. Munro occupied the chair, and during the evening wished the departing soldiers God Speed and a sate return. Eulogistic remarks regarding the sacrifices being made by them were also made by Messrs A. D. Bell, J. Shaw, W. Daw and Allen. The names of the guests of the evening were:—J. H. Gillett, J. Paton. G. A. .Atkins, G. Munro, M. Finn, R. Finn, P. Smith, H. Wilkinson, H. Kenyon and T. Atkins. It was noticed that among those present were Messrs P. Furley and L. Brown, who have volunteered for the next c- 1 and also Troopers I. Murray aud J. Ghizzi, who were Lome on final leave. All the men mentioned have volunteered from the Clevedon district. Towards the close of the evening MetSia I'. Keubeii and W. Heteraka responded to the toast of the Maori contingents by dancing a haka which was much appreciated.

A most modem shearing shed has just been completed on Mr A. D. Bell's property at Clevedon. The structure, which was built by Mr J. McAndrew, Papakura, is complete in every detail, and is fitted for three machines. It is of iran with wooden fittings and contains a new woolpress, Mr Bell is also having a new cowshed, bain and implement shed erected.

The death occurred on Saturday last of Mr Donald Eraser, in his seventy-eighth year. The deceased came to Clevedon about three years ago from MaHterton. During that time he has greatly improved the property which he look up. The funeral took place at Mastcrton.
