CLEVEOON.
FARMERS' UNION MEETING.
A meeting of the Clevedon branch of the Farmers' Union was held in the Public Hall on the evening of September 25th. Present: Messrs J. Luke, president, C. A. Fawcett, J. Hancock, W. Hanson, W. T. Bell, A. D. Bdl, H. W. Cawte, j. Hoye, J. Alexander, S. A. Brown, 1). M. Bryan, Dr Hallcn, J. Sbaw, H. Bull; and J. A. Gandy, secretary. Mr C. A. Fawcett took the chair.
Mr A. Daw was unanimously elected a member of the branch. A letter was received from the Agricultural Department, Wellington, stating that it would be impossible to semi a lecturer to give an addr.ss on soils this season.—The secretary wss instructed to ruply thanking the Department for their letter and asking for an early date for the lecturer's visit next season. A letter from Mr E. H. Browne pointed out that the dates of sal°a of stock by thj varLui auctioneering firms came close togethtr.—No action *as ttken.
A letter was read from Mr E. U. Jack, secretary Dominion Executive, re help for discharged soldiers, for which a Department had been sot up by the New Z?aland Govern* ment, askirg for the help of the various branches of the Union.—lt was decided to reply that the branch would do what it - could in the matter, and to suggest, that a list giving the necessary information concerning applicants for work Bhould be forwarded t<j thj various branches at convenient intervals. Dr Hallen brought up the subject if the Farmers' Union Mounted Rifle Clubs, giving same recent information received from Major Lu.sk, placing the matter in a new light—lt was resolved that Messrs J. Sbaw, A. D. Bell, and J. A. Gandy should be a committee to obtain further information as to what the Defence Department were prepared to do in the matter, and to act accordingly. Dr Hallen was appointed to enquire aB to the fixing of a stated time for the delivery of the evening mail. The secretary was authorised to notify members in arrears with their subs that if the same were not paid on or before October 31st they would cease to be members of the branch.
The resignations ot Messrs G. A. Wilson, I. L. Smith and id. Hawthorn were accepted. Mr J. Hoye gave a very interesting report on the results obtained by him from the use of silt obtained from salt water creeks, as a top-dressing fo pastures, producing sods cut from the paddock to demonstrate the change in soil and grasses.—A hearty vote ot thanks was given to Hr Boye on the conclusion of bis discourse. It was resolv?d to obtain a scow load of silt for experimental plots.
Mr Browne's motion on the question of the Government holding over 1,000,000 or 'more bushels ot wheat from season to season, and guaranteeing a payable price tor wheat growing, and " that the matter be brought before the Provincial Executive and the member for the district, was fully discussed, and the resolution was carried unanimously.
