THE Pukekohe and Waiuku Times.

PUBLISHED MONDAYS, WEDNESDAYS AND FRIDAYS.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1915 THE BALKAN STATES.

" We nothing extenuate, nor iet down auaht in mafe."

The Official Organ of : The Franklin County Council. The Pukekohe Borough Council. The Tuakau Town Board. The Karaka Road Board. The Pokeno Road Board. The Wairoa Road Board. The Papakura Towu Board. The Waikato River Board. The Mercer Town Board. Etc., etc.

Amongst much that is uncertain concerning Turkey aud the Balkan States, is at least perfectly clear that Turkey is hard pressed, and that aid can be rendered only by Germany pushing down through Serbia and Bulgaria. It is not certain yet whether Qermauy intends to render this aid. Undoubtedly it would be an exceedingly difficult task to invade Serbia and Bulagria, and presuming success, ber enctmous lines of communication would cause constant concern. It is quite evident tbut she must pay sotre heed to the repeated Turkish requests for assistance; but she may endeavour to satisfy tbe Turk by an attack against Serbia that it is not intended to be pushed right home. It is yet by no means certain that she has Bulgaria on her side, although to a certain extent Bulgaria appears to be under her thumb. It would seem that Germany could not, at the present juncture, spare enough men to fight their way through Serbia and Bulgaria. Some months ago, M. Pasics, the Premier of Serbia, warned the Allies against a new German offensive. This was a great German-Austrian invasion ot Serbia with tbe object of penetrating to the Asgean Sea, seizing Salonica and other coaßtal towns, and joining hands with the Turks in the Gallipcli Peninsula. From Orsova the line of advance, it was stated, would be through Widdin, on the Danube, opposite to the Roumanian town of Kalalat, and thence via Sofia to the coast of the Aegean. Marching along the coa&l the Germanic army would enter Turkey to the east of Dedeagatcb, and would then join with the Turkf, entering: the Uallipoli Peninsula at the lines of Bulair with the object of hurling the Allied troops into tbe sea by sheer force of number. But the crux ol the position seems to be this, liofuro such a movement rould be carried nut the three Balkan Kingdoms Bulgaria. Roumania and Greece-must be bought otf or fought off.
