The late Lance-Corporal Patrick James Deveresux, who wai killed in cction at Gallipoli on the 10th Auguit last, was a s">. ot Mr and lira James Devtreaux, of Patumahoe. He was born on 14th November, 1894, at Mount George, Ferns, Co, Wexford, Ireland, and cime to New Zealand with his parent* in December, 1910. Since his arrival he had bren employed at Yates' Seed Farm, Duck land, and on Mr Ivan Motion's and Ih? Wilkinson's farm at Pukckohe Mill. Just previous to his departure for Trentham he was engaged assisting hia father in dairying on Mr J. Henry's (ilenbrook farm, Patumahoe. On account of hia having previously be*n in the Territorial Force?, Devereaux was appointed to tha position of LanceCorporal on his arrival at 'lrentham. H« left New Zealand in Jans last with the Fifth Reinforcements. The deceased so'dier wes este med by all who knew him, hia un» assuming yet manly bearing and ir.hereut courtesy being particularly nuiiceatld in this new land, where our rising maDhooJ ia careless ot such outward manifestation of the iuward man. To anyone who hud seen him in hia uniform he looked every inrh a soldier and gave promise of rising to distinction in th« service had not his career been brought to such an untimely end. Flc had no misconception of the ritks he was taking in volunteering to Bervs his country on the battlefront at the Dardanelles. When reminded of his riik Ly hi. (hums he invariably replied that « man had to die but once, and com rue had To take the risk. If ttia same spirit animated all the war eligiblea ol the Empire, the German menace would scon be a thing of the past. It is a pity that our voluntary sj stem in this war ia robbing us of this clasa of our young men, while the less desirable ones are left behind. Tta heartfelt sympathy of the coonunity is extended to Mr and Sirs Devereaux in their loss of such an estimable son, and to the members of the Devereaux family. A movement is on foot by the deceased's ctums to erect a tablet to his memory in St. Michael's Koman Cath. ilc Church, Patumahoe, where he was an attendant.
