The danger, as reported elsewhere in this issue, to which a couple of ladies were one evei.ing this we(K subjected by encountering an infuriated cow in East Street, Pukekohe, should bring horns to the Borough Council the necessity of making some provision for the s:lety of pedestrians passing along the road in question. Unfortunately, the laying cut ot the town does not permit on the eastern eide of a special route being utilised along which cattle should be dtiven, and the result is thai residents in East street and its immediate locality are always exposed to the riuk of meeting stock. Oo the upper portion of the road, viz., from Prospect Terrace to the New Zealand Loan Co's. saleyards, a railed-off fco'path already exists, and the safety of the public demands that similar precautions should be taken from and including the railway bridge up the hill to Prospect Terrace. As things are now, apart f<nm the danger to which pedestrians are exposed, considerable damage is effected to the footpaths oi either side of the road by cattl? encroacbitg thereon in course of their progress, whereas at comparatively small expense handrails on either side of the road would be the means ot not only safeguarding the public, but of preventing cattle "cutting-up" the footpath. As the only meana of approach to the t iwn from the eastern side of the railway, blast street is entitled tc special consideration from the Council in the way indicated. Otherwise the necessity of action may be learned after tome person or persons, adult or child, may have paid the penalty of the Council's failure to recognise existing danger.
