NO WIDE SKIRTS IN GERMANY.
Tlie "Frankfurter Zeitung" punishes a protest against the lack of patriot Km of German women who "are following the new fashion" of wearing full skirts. The writer, who needless to say, assume* that the fashion is "German," writes: —It is quite possible that full skirts are more sensible and also prettier than the skirts of recent years, which made walking almost impossible. But why must one adopt such new fashions precisely at a moment when we have to bo very economical in our use of wool and cotton? Have the creators of this new fashion ever considered the matter? A siinp'e calculation will -how that it takes twice as much material to make a skirt as it did only a. yeHr ago, and if one multiplies this increased consumption by the number of ladies who follow the fashion one arrives at an enormous figure. We consider that German fashions to-day ought to put nli considerations behind that of patriotism. and constantly consider how we are to economise our small stocks of raw materials.
