Improvements at Buckland.
iTO THE EDITOR.] Sir,—ln regard to the suggested loan for Buckland to form and ' metal Jamieson's road, I understand one of the ratepayers, viz, Mr i Jame3 Barber, who was perfectly willing to uifin a petition asking that this road Bhotild be improved '' when he waa under the impression that it would cost him nothing, now objects to the loan being raised on the ground that the other residents ocly want the money epent for the purpose of telling their farms, Hnd he cannot afford to pay anything. Now, as the cost of raising the loan would only be about 5J per cent and £IOO is all that wc require to rais", (he interest would not amount to much when divided amongst seven ratepayers (Mr Barber bang one of the smallest). I cannot uiderstand why he should raise such strong objections, especially as Rome of the rates paid by us helped to make a scoria footpath for him which was certairlv not necessary. But as he does object, 1 express my willingness to pay his share until such time as he may be enabled to do so himself. ■ As regards the Billing of our farms, Mr Barber's attitude needs ro comment by me, other than a reminder of what happened to enable him to sell his farm at funi. Thanking you for allowing me space in your valuable paper, 1 am, etc., GILBERT KELSON, For Butler, Kelson and Williamß, Buckland. ♦
