MERCER.
Mercer Butter Factory. REMARKABLE EXPANSION. The returns of the Waikato Cooperative Dairy Company's Mercer butter factory show that the output for the past week was an increase of 50 boxes of butter, representing 28001bs of butter, on the figures for tbe corresponding week of tbe previous year, and on Tuesday last 91 boxes of butter were manufactured on the premises. Kecent aggregates are double those for the same peiiod of last season. Tbe total weekly supply of cream arriving from tbe depots at Awhitu, Urua bay and Polkk, the latter being a new depot, total 50 cans par week, representing 500 gallons of cream, and the total weekly supply from districts on tbe Wai kato river represents 500 gallons of cream. The supply from these sources has doubled within the last twelve months, From the south tbe cream arrives twice weekly, but from the Ist October a thnce weekly supply vill be maintained. The latter service i 3 already in existence ou the Waikato river.
A regular supply of cream is arriving by rail from tbe fallowing districts, viz.: Papatoetoe, Manurewa, Papakura, Drurv, Paerata, Pukekohe, Buckland, Kunciman, Kama Rama, Tuakau, Pokeno and Razorback, while the Pokeno Valley supply is carted to the factory. To facilitate the handling of butter a packing machine is used to pack the boxes.
Mr A. G. C. Glass, chairman of tbe Waikato River BoarJ, is visiting Wellington with a view ot obtaining assistance from the Government towards works on the river. He i», at the same time, endeavouring to secure a subsidy from the Railway Department for having indirectly improved the draining facilities of the railway line in the vicinity of Mercer, which at times was partly covered with flood waters frem tbe liver.
The latest local "boy'' to be accepted as an infantryman for a remlorccment force is Mr -W. Jtnkii.s, of the Mercer butter factory.
Several local residents have met with accidents during the last tew dayp. Mr Fred Tregoweth has been treated by Dr Bronte, of PuKekohe, for a twisted knee, which he sustained while workirg oa Messrs Glass Bro?. new snop, and Mr Percy N. King, the town clerk, is incapicated with injuries received through falling on tbe cement flooring of the verandah of Mr Valentine's drapery shop.
A new tram line has been laid down from the stone quarry to the train line to replace the one which served for a number of years until it was washed away by a flood recently. Mr Butler, manager of the quarry, reports that he will now be able to supply metal orders that have to go by rail.
