NEW RAILWAY RATES.
The Local Effect. The revised railway rate?, announced when the Budget was introduced in Parliament, are to come into force as from Sunday next, the 19th inst. The new orJinary fares 'from Pukekohe to Auckland will be First Class 4s 4d single ami 8s 8d return, as against the existing charges of 4s and 8s respectively, and tbe Second Class 2s lid single and 5s lOd return, aB againat 2s 8d and 5s 4d now. Excursion Fares to Auckland will be advanced from 5) 2d first and 2s 7d second to 5s lOd and 4i respectively. It will still be possible to take advantage of suburban rates from Manurewa to Auckland by first booking to Manurewa and then paying excess fare and the revised charges for this stand at 4s 7d and 3s Id for first and second return respectively from Pukekohe to Manurewa (us compared with 4s 2d and 2s lOd now), whilst 2s 7d first and Is 7d second will ba the charge for returns from Manurewa to Auckland, es against 2s 4d and ]s 5d nuw. Consequently, whilst the mithod referred to now makes tbe cost of the second class journey to Auckland and back 4s 3d (as against 5s 4d in booking direct), the revised charge will be 4s 8d (as against 5s lOd in booking direct). Ordinary tickets to Wellington instead of coating as now 50s Id first single, 33s 5d second single l , 100 a2d first return, and 60s lOd second return, will be 53s 9d first singl?, 353 lid second single, 107s 6d first return, and 71s S)d second return.
Excuraion fares to Wellington are to be raised from 66s first and 33a second to 71s 9d and 47a lid respectively.
Tourist tickets will be raised from £lO to £l3 for travel on both Inlands and £8 will be charged for one month for either Island instead of £6 as now.
No change is made in regard to workers' 12 tripi or workers' weekly tickets or for technical school tickets
Sleeping teith tickets will be subject to the Id in the Is extra charge, viz., 10s lOd instead of 10a as now. For checked luggage, now free, a charge of 3d per parcel is to be made, but whilst Id per day is cow charged if the same is left at the station of destination, free storage is to be given for one month. A new regulation provides that if not, claimed in three months checked luggage may be sold. Checking fnr inter-Island luggage, viz., from Wellington to Lyttelton or vicj versa, is increaaed from 3d to 6d per packet. Left luggage will cost 3d per packet instead cf 2d as now, but as in the case c.f checked luggage the new rate allows of one month'sfree storage instead of the current charge ot Id per day. "* For luagagt left in the trains or found unclaimed on railway premises the chaige is reduced from fid ti 3d per packet. For bicycles there will be a minimum charge cf 4d up to 12 miles instead ot 3d as at present, with proportionate increases on other mileages. Goods rates, with the exception of timber, are all increased by ten per cent., the minimum charge fur the conveyance of milk b.ing 7d fir ten gallons for eleven miles instead of fid as now. Th= ten per cent increase also alfects the rates for horses.
