Pleasant Social. A social in connection with the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held in the Oddfellows' Hall, Pukekohe, on Thursday afternoon last, a good number of ladies being; present. The meeting was opened by h.vmn, prayer, and Bible reading, by Mrs Frost, president, who also conducted the usual business of the Union. The mo9t pleasing featora of the gathering was the distribution of prizes to the public scbool children for their essays on "Temperance." Iwo prizes were awarded ia each class from the 3rd Standard upward?, the Rev. George Frost" being the judge, Tho prize essays were read by the president, and were voted by all remarkably goad. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Flavell, headmaster, for bis kindness and co-opeiation in this matter. Ureat credit is due to him for the very excellent work of the children, also to Mr Frost, who .so kindly gave up bis time to read all the essays ard judge them, which must have beeu a very difficult piece ot work. Ths following ara the prize winners:-Third Standard, Henry Butcher i, May bhotbolt 2. Fourth Standard: Annie McNally 1, Jean Hunter and Lily Smith tie for second. Fifth standard Avis Potter I, Howard Hunter 2. Sixth Standard: Ruth Dabson ], Bertha Smith 2. Sscondary lX'partment: Freida Hanson 1, Margaret Leathern 2.

Then followed a musical piogramme, which was much enjoyed, viz.,:—Solo, "Somawhere a Voice ia Calling," by Mrs Carter; violin solo, "Heaits aid Flowers," Master Nelson Mee; recitation, Mrs Honeyford; solo, "'Scuse me, Teacher," Master Caitsr; recitation. "Follow the King," Master Herbert Vant; solo, "lin, Bury Thy Sorrow," Misa Campbell; solo, "Ihe Drunkard's Lone Child," Misa Jean Hunter. Subsequently afternoon tee was handed round. Thanka are due to Mrs Frist and Mrs Mee, who were responsible for the frorgammr, also the ladies wfco wo'.ked so hard to make the social such a great success.
