Among the members uf the last contingent to leave Fiji for the French Front was Mr A. T. Bowden. Mr Bowden was a member of tbe staff of the "Pukekohe and Waiuku Times" for about the first two years of its publication.
At a meeting of the Fukekohe Patriotic Committee, held on Wednesday last, the Mayor (Mr H. G. R. Mason) presiding, a letter was read from the Auckland Provincial Keilef Association inviting co-operation with that oganisation Members, however, were unanimously of opinion that a Central Dominion Fund would give better and more equal working than provincial funds, and it was alsu argued that the latter would necessarily entail extra expense in the distribution of funds by reason of the appointment of paid officials. It was decided to ask the Auckland Association whether definite arrangements had been made for the setting up of provincial bodies instead ot one central authority. An inspector of the Labour Department is visiting Pukekohe to-day in connection with the applications forwarded by tbe Chamber of Commerce for the erection of Workers' Dwelling?. The Auckland Dairy Produce Committee has tixed tbe wholesale price for butter and enggs for the week ending August 28th as follows:—Factory butter, Is 3d; - farmer's, separator and dairy butter, 10d;eggs, lOd per dozen. To-morrow (Tuesday) at 2 p.m., at the Pukekohe Auction Mart, Messrs J. T. Stembndge and Co. will submit to auction various properties, situated at Ararimu, Kotorua, Pukekohe and Awfaito. McGovern, of Pukekohe, who was a number of the Sam.an Contingent, left Pukekihe to-day fur Auckland, en rout.: for Trentbam, where he is to join a Reinforcemeit Draft prior to departure for Gallipoli. Entries promise to come forward in substantial numbers for the Spring Flower Show to he held under the auspices of the Pukekohe Presbyterian Church on Thursday and Friday of next week, in the Premier Hall, and a highly successful exhibition should result.
The uncertainty that prevailed last week as to which of the two brothers, Major S. C. Schofield or Sergt. Roy Schoiield, had been wounded, as intimated in a private cablegram received, has now been solved by the publication by the Defence Department of the name of Major Schofield in the wounded list.
Mr John David Murray paid a visit to PuktkoVe last Saturday after an absence of 28 years. Be formerly resided in the town with his parents on what ia cow the r'o3t Office tite, where his father carried on business as a tailor. Mr Murray finds remarkable changes in the town, and expressed his pleasure at noticing the maiked and steady progress the the district has made. Mr Murray is now a resident of Stratford, Taracaki. The gift free of royalty, of 500 yards of spawls was made ta the Pukekohe borough Council at the Council meetii g on Wednesday last by Cr Ivan Motion, on behalf of his wife, the owner of the Pukekohe quarry. The Foreman of Works, Mr Clews, bad reported that owing to silt constantly causing trouble in tbc bill district after heavy rains the laying of spawls was advisable. The Council doubted whether just at present funds would permit of the outlay, and it was then Cr Motion made the handsome offer, which was naturally gledly accepted. Messrs. J. T. Stembridge and Co. report: At our weekly sale at the Pukekohe Auction Mart on Friday there was a good attendance, and a large number of entries was disposed of at satisfactory prices. In the produce line potatoes, cabbage, and onions of good quality were short of demand. Pigs came forward in good numbers and all sold at good rates. Prices realised were: potatoes (seed) 6s cwt., onions Ud lb., cauliflowers •Id. each, pumpkins and melons about 4s cwt., parsnips 2s sugar bag full, carrots Is 6d bag, hay 2s 6d bundle, pigs small 12s to 255, slips 31s, poultry (small number penned) roosters from Is 6d, hens Is 2d to 2s 2d, apples 20 lbs 4s 3d, 40 lbs 8s a case. A quantity of sundries was also disposed of.
A tbe meeting of the Pukekohe Bomugh Council on Wednesday last, Cr Patterson suggested the advisabiity of a dumping ground tor metal being secured on railway property. Tbe Town Clerk explained that tbe previous Council bad made a similar suggestion but the Railway Department had informed thein that <a rental of £lO would be charged and the Council would alsj have to bear the cost of construction. Cr Comrie stated that the old Council came to the conclusion that the expensa was not warranted. Moreover, with their roads getting better it became more and more unnecessary to lay in Jarge stocks of metal. The subject then dsopped. Our travelling representative, who last week paid a visit to the Paparata district, reports that the country all along the route through Pukekohe East and Bombay, as well as at Paparata, is looking exceptionally well for the time of year, and farmers are on the best of terms with themselvea over their good prospects. Thanks to the early spring paddocks all show a considerable growth and feed promises to be abundant Oat crops are also in a forwaid state. The . lambing season is already producing a good percentage, and tbe frisky youngsters make merry in the sunshine. Stacks cf spawh are to be seen at intervals on the road, and it is to be hoped that ere long they will be utilised to remedy before next winter tbe many boggy patches on tbe highway that are out of all keeping with the proguss that is in every other respect apparent. The subject of fire escape provision at the Premier Hall engaged the attention of the Pukekohe Borough" Council on Wednesday last, the matter arising out ot a report from the Fire Brigade that during the Cherniavsky concert on the previous i'riday the main doori were looked and a request made by the Brigade for them to be kept unlocked, as required by the by-lawe, was refused by the management. In the course of discussion complaint was made by members that the side-d.ors were always kept bolted instead ot being made to of en automatically, and, further, that the only exit provided from the stage was by means of a ladder. It was decided to aßk the Building Inspector to repoit on the exit arrangements and also to warn the hall proprietor that in any future case of breach of regulations a prosecution would be instituted.
