DKAIN ACJfci BOARD MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Aka Aka Drainage board was held in the Hall on Friday, the members presei t being Messrs G. Hill, chairman, E. T. Bent, J. N. Massey, I'. Henry, ar.d (he secretary, Mr W. J. King. i FINANCE. .The financial statement for the past month showed the expenditure to have been £ll 7a 2d for interest, £4 11b 3d fjr insurance, and £3 6s 8J for the clerk's salary. The receipts included £2 3s 9d, for general rates, and 15s lOd for special rates. The overdraft prior to the meeting was £39 5s sd. The balance sheet tor the yeai ended March 31st last showed the total receipts to have been £656 8s 9d, including £315 13s 8d from geteral rates, £95 18s 4d from arrears on general rates, £43 6s 5d from special rates, £2O lis 9d * arreais on special rates, and £163 r 19s Id credit balance at the beginning of the year. The expenditure included £355 14s on repairs and improvements, £59 5s u 8d for interest, and £SB 0s 6d for deepening lower portion of Eastern drain, the credit balance at the end of the year being £ll2 12s sd. RESIGNATION. The resignation of Mr S. N. West, on account of baving stld his property in the district, was received with regrtt, and the clerk wss instructed to take Ibe neceseary steps for the election to fill the vacancy. The writer thanked the Board for the consideration thown him in the , past, and wished the Board every success. The chairman sail that although Mr West had only been on the Board a short period it had been a pleasant time. EASTERN DRAIN. The clerk reported thaj the Prime r Minister had written that the question of Ihe Eastern road drain, about which he had been asked, had been referred to his advisers. RATES. On the motion of the chairman and Mi Massey, the resolution fixing the rates was confirmed, the rateß to te as follows:—On lirstcl ss land, l£d in the pound, second--3 class, Id; third-clas?, §rt; fourth- . class, nil. The chairman said it had been agreed that ibey should collect £SO more in ratis than pteviously, an'' Mr Bent said that the rates might ' yield more than £SO over last year's , amount. It was pointed out that the rates could be increased over the amount > of which notice bad been given, but Mr Henry said it would raisj a "hornet's nest" if that were done, now that the rates had been adver- " tised. WORK ON IJRAIN. The clerk said that Mr Bogue ■ claimed an allowance off his rates for work he had done on a drain, and asked what he was to do about the matter. ! On the motion of Messrs Massey and Henry, it was decided that an allowance of £2 be made for the work done. ACCOUNIS. Accounts totalling £23 5s 5d were passed for payment, on the motion of the chairman and Cr Henry. BRIDGE WANTED. Mr Massey mentioned that Mr Douglas and others desired to obtain a bridge across the Eastern drain, opposite Hill's road, instead of the pipe culvert there. ' Mr Henry said the pipes at 1 present there were quite inadequate to carry the water in flood time. The chairman believe.! a bridge was necessary, but the question > was, how were they going to get ' the money to have the drains cleaned and meet demands like the present one. Mr Henry -said the work would cost about £lO. In ather places where pipes had been put they had to be taken out again. In reply to a question, the secretary said that the County Council • had paid half the cost of the work in the first instance, and the | chairman remarked that if ibe Council met them again in the same way it would be all right. Ultimately, it was decided to have the necessary work done. FLOOD GATE. On the motion of Messrs Massey and Bent, it was decided to spend up to £lO on the necessary work on the Mangawhera Hood gate. ♦
