Pukekohe's Rates.
I TO THE EDITOR.] Sir,—As * member of the old Council, and having read Mr Lawrie's letter in jour issue of the 28th inst., under tha above heading, I wish to call the attention of both Mr Lawiie and the ratepayers generally to the fact that the balance msutioned i* his letter as being in hand when the new Council came into office was really the balance in hand at the end of the last tinanical year, March 31st, 1915. From this amount must be deducted the sum, of practically £3OO, beiog the amount of the debit balance on Waterworks Account for the past year, and in addition the old Council had actually spent, or incurred ilabilities, to the amount of a further £735 in wages, salaries, road material, etc., eo that when the new Council cams into office there was, with money received since March 31st, only a bum of £BO standing to the credit ot the General Account with which to carry on until the new rates could be collected. As regards the balance of loan monies, £1592, a sum of £390 was spent by the old Council, and this left only a balance of about £I2OO ot loaa money for the new Council to spend; or a total of £I2BO, instead of £2655 as stated bv Mr Lawrie. Mr Lawrie further stated that the increase in valuations at Id rate would bring iu £IBOO. As a matter of fact a Id rate would only realisj £1678.-1 am, etc., F. HUBBAKU.
