WATER CHARGES IN PUKEKOHE.
Council's Revised Scale.
The water charge problem has been again dealt with by the Pukekobe Borough Council, the aim btirg that the waterworks Bbr.uld be rendered self-paying instead of prices, practically below ccs f , being levied on consumsis and the balance of expsnditure being found by the ratepayers in the old Town Board area. The current scale of charge is 5s p?r quarter for 4000 gallons for consumers in the old Town Board area and 7s in the "outer" area.
At the meetirg of the Borcueh Council, held on Wednesday, the Waterworks Committee submitted the |i Ihwing report:— "We nave met and considered the matter cf revising the present scale of charges in connection with the borough waterworks, and org to recommend that the following charges be made us from October Ist, 1915, viz. :-
"(a) In respect of the ordina y supply, 8000 gallons p r r six months, a rate to be made and levied upon nil lards and buildings to which water is supplied, to be based on the annual rateable value as appearing rn valuation roll (annual value-6 percent, of capital value). (1) Whera the annual rateable value does not exceed £l2 10s the charge sh9ll he 10s . per anr.um; (2) on the first £3OO 5 per cent of such value, and 4 per cent on balance of value ever £3OO.
"(b) Upon all lands and tnildings to which water can be, but is not, supplied, situate within 100 yards from any part of the waterworks, one-half of the rates above mentioned.
"(c) Upon til buildings used as stores or warehouses, or for any purposvs other than as dwelling houses, one-half the above mentioned rate in A.
"(d) All water consumed above 8900 gallons per six months to be paid fur at the rate of Is 6d per 1000 gallons within the town district, and ?a per 1000 gallons outside that district.
"Extraordinary charges as follows—
"(a) New Zealand railways, Is 3d per 1000 gallons, per meter; 8000 gallons per six months minimum. "(b) School and churches, Is 6d per 1000 gallons; 8000 per fix months minimutfi.
"(c) Non-rateable props rty, 2s 6d per 1000 gallons; minimum of 4000 gallons per six months. "(d) Saleyards, 2s 6d per 1000 gallons; minimum of 4000 gallons per six months. "(e) Power purpuses, supplied through a quarter-inch nozzle, Is 6d per 1000 gallons; minimum 8000 gallons; larger sized nozzles by special arrangement with the Council.
"(t) Outside the borough, by special arrangement with Council. "(g) Private lines: A rate to be charged on annual values of propertie?, as follows:-Five per cent on first £SO, 2£ per cent on second £SO, 1 per cent on balance, for minimum <A 8000 gallons per six months; all water covsumed over the minimum to be charged for at rate of 2s per 1000 gallons. "The committe also recommend that for the purpose of carrying these recommendations into effect each dwelling be valued separately on the roll." It was decided that consideration of the report should be deferred to a special meeting of the Council to bs held on Wednesday, August 11th, the Mayor intimating his intention of then moving that the revised charges should be adopted as from October Ist.
