Night-Soil Removal Adopted

Lively Opposition.

As tbe outcome ot persistency on the part of Cr Patterson, the Puke* kohe Borough Cout.cil on Wednesday decided, by a maj trity, to adopt the riipht-soil removal system pendlcg the institution of a drainage system. Eirly in the meeting, Cr Pattersun askfd for permission to bring the subject forward, but tbe Mayor ruled that the Order Paper should be proceeded with, 'the Council's reuglations provide that no fresh business should be introduced aft-r 10 p.m. and a few minutes prior to that hour Cr Patterson again rose and expressed bis intention tu mova a resolution in favour of the adoption of tbe night-soil removal sys'ern. 'Jhe Mayor, almist simultaneously was on his feet and askej Cr Patterson to give way to bim, as the matter ha desired to mention would he quickly disposed of and then Cr Patterson could proceed. C r Patterson, however, declined to accede to tbe Maynr's request, stating that at the last meeting he bad been mltd out of order by the 10 o'clock regulations and he did not intend to be "outed" on the present occasion.

Continuing, Cr Pat'ersoa proposed that the night soil removal system should be adopted io Pukekohe. They bad, be said, been waiting two months to appoint an engineer tor a drainage scheme and that next summer would be past before any* tiling defir ite was done in that direction, and in the meantime householders were being inconvenienced. He strongl? condemned the existing method of burial of night soil in gardens or back yards. Cr Hubbard seconded, and considered that Pukekohe was a long way behind other towns in sanitary conveniences.

Cr Barter supported, but suggested that rubbish removal should also be instituted. Crs Patterson and Hubbard agreed to include Cr Baiter's suggestion in the motion. Cr Comrie strongly condemned the proposal, which ha believed would mult in the drainage scheme being delated and rejected. Cr Bilkcy doubted if a drainage' scheme would be carried on a loan pull He fcuppurted the resolution. The Mayor agreed with Cr Comrie that the drainage scheme proposal would be aavcisely affected by the adoption of the resolu'i-jn. Cr Comrie proposed as an amendment, and Cr Clarke seconded, that the matter should be postponed until after a loan poll for a drainage scheme had been taken. Cr Patterson replied to the dis cushion and then Cr Comrie rose to reply to the amendment. Cr Patterson objected, raying that according to the inks of debate to was entitled to be the last speaker and there was no right of reply for liu mover of an amendment. Cr Connie Ua'nvd that Cr Patterson was wiotig in his but the Mayor uphtld Cr Patterson's viiws.

Upon a vote, ib* amendment was rrjected and tha motion canied, and the Drainage Committee was instructed to tubmit details for the carrying out of the resolution. (Jrs Comrie and Clarke then tendered their resignations as memberß of the Drainage Committee, Btating that they did not intend to be a party to a scheme to which they were opposed. The Mayer asked for the resignations to bs withdrawn, saving that when details were forthcoming difficulties night arise. Cr Comrie, however, stated that he would abide by his decision, as he recognised that it was only right that the wishes of the majority should be given effect to and cot imped .d.
