COUNTY ENGINEER'S REPORT.
At the meeting of tha Franklin County Council on Thursday last, ths County Engineer, Mr McArthur, leported as follows:
GOVERNMENT GRANTS. Since the last meeting proposals for works have been approved by the Public Woiks Department, viz.:—laurangarutu to Waipipi main rend, subsidy £875, £1 for JB2; Taurangaruru Top road, {{rant £SO; Putatitu creek road and bridge, grant £250; Needles wharf, Maoukau harbour, grant £l5O, £ for £; MauDgatwhiri Stream to Mangatangi Stream, subsidy £l6 10s 6d; Waiuku to Pollok, Harney'* to Lee's Gully, xrant £100; Patumahoe to Waiau Straight road, grant £250; Aka-Aka to Pukekohe, via Shepherd's, subsidy £IOOO, £1 for 1; Great South road, Drury to Mercer, subsidy £260, £ for £. Authorities have been received for the last three-named grants enabling your Council to proceed with the woks. There are accounts presented for payment at this meeting for the Government grant ot £250 for lepairs to Awhitu wnarf. The work has been carried out by the Awhitu Road Board, the total cost of the same being £255 7s Bd. The sum of £5 7s 8d ia therefore charged to the Awhitu Wharf Account. Ihe records of the late Awhitu Road Board having only arrived on Tuesday last I am, unable to report further on other works now being earned out in that ditsrict. CONTRACTS LET. During the past month two contracts were let, the tenders being:—Contract No. 113-For forming Carey Farm to Pope's Corner read, H. Appleby, £l2l, accepted. Contract No. 115—For carting 142 cubic yards oroken metal Mauku to Union road--A. J. Moore, 3s lid per yard; J. Brady, 3s 3d per yard; W. McFadden, 3s 5d per yard; J. Wiahait, 3s per yard, accepted.
WOODEN DRAIN, PATUMAUOE. During the tecent heavy rains the storm water backed on to private property through the wooden drain which runs along the road being blocked.. The open trench on the road bting dangreous it was conbidered advisable to take immediate step c , and bo as to have the work completed without delay tha pipes were ordered accordingly. The total cost of pipeß, opening up trench and laying will be about £37. KE DRAINAGE OF ROAD AT DAZELEY'S. PUNI. During the month t'r Woods and myself visited this locality and made satisfactory arrangements with Mr J. Flake and Mr W. T. Daze ley as regards the digging of drain and maintenance uf the same. PRIVATE CROiJJINUS. 1 would suggest to your Council that throughout the County the iollowing rules be adopted: That application be made to the Council iii writiug for all private
crossings required, the work to be done by the Council and tbe actual cost of the same to be charged to the applicant. Jn tbe ccs'e of the Council cutting down or tilling in at the approach of an exisMng entrance,- 1 would suggest that the Council provide at their own expense a new crossing. WORKS GENERALLY. Owing to the bad weather experienced during the past month it has been impossible to push on with tbe contracts in progress. The County atone crushing plant is now stopped for the winter, the men having been put off about the 19th June. The plant is at present on the Great South road, near Runcirnao. The ordinary surface work has been carried out during the month. A number of metal roads have been repaired as far as funds would permit. Spawling contract —Details of advisable spawling contracts were appended. The report was adopted.
