WAIUKU NEWS.

We are asked by Mr. C. T. Barnball to correct a statement published by a contemporary to the effect that he had been re-elected unopposed as the member for the West Waid of the Auckland Education Board. As mentioned in our issue of Wednesday last Mr Body, of Te Kuiti, is contesting the Beat against Mr Barriball, and the Utter naturally does not desire his candidature to be prejudiced by an announcement that might have the effect of causing his supporters to think there was no necessity for them recordiug their votes.

Mr John Farrell, architect to the Education Board paid a visit of inspection to the schools iu this and the surrounding districts on Friday last. Ho left instructions for improvements to be made at the Karoetahi school, included iu which is a new porch. Mr C T. Barriball, in the course of an interview with a "Times" representative lust week, expressed himself as distinctly favourable to the proposal to establish a High School in Pukekoho as the natural centre for such na institution for the benefit of the children of the Lower Waikato. Mr Barriball made it clear that if he is re-elected as ft member of the Education Board, (he project will receive his support when brought before that authority. Captain Aldred, Adjutant; Lieut. Makgill, officer commanding, and N Sergt.-Major H, Jackson, all of the 3rd Auckland Mounted Regiment visited Waiuku during the week em 1 . On Friday eveuing a parade of the members of Waiuku Rifle Club was held in the Public Hall, Captain Aldred instructing the men iu attack practice. The officers report that good progress has been made by the men. On Saturday morning nine N.C.O.'s were examined in practical work and. in the afternoon u theoretical examination was conducted in the Defence Office. The late Mr. John Middlelon Chandler, whose death was reported in our last issue, was 77 years of age He arrived at Auckland in 1860 from England in the sailing ship, Matoka, and settled on one of the sections offered to immigrants by the then ProviuoUl Government. He revisited England in 1880. In his younger days Mr Chandler served for a number of years in the navy and in the now defunct Waiuku Volunteers. With the exception of a stroke of paralysis some 14 years ago deceased enjoyed a life free from illness. Right up to the last he interested himself in gardening, a hobby in which he experienced a fair amount of success. He was married twice, the second time to Miss Sarah Roberts a daughter of Mr Hugh Roberts, County Cavern, Ireland, who survives him It was with general regret that the people of the district heard the sad news ou j Friday morning last. His mortal remains were enterred in the Waiuku Anglican Cemetery, the Rev. J. C. Fussell officiating at the grave side. * Messrs Handing Bros, continue to cater in their usual efficient manner for requirements of patrons at their livery and bait stables. A striking painting, representing The "Last Supper" is at present on view in Mr A. E. King's window. It has been presented to the Wounded Soliders' Furd by Mhs Ruth Henry, and is -to be disponed of at a bazaar to be held shortly, where it is expected to realign £ls for the cause.

Toe postponed mo:-t of the WaiuKu branch of the Pakuranga Hunt Club will be held on Thursday nex', when a good run with the hounds ia expected.
