TUAKAU

A MINIATURE DONNY. BROOK. Saturday evening last produced a miniature "Donnybruok" in Tuakau, the opposing patties being representatives of the pakeha and Maori races. Io pursuance of the determination of the police authorities to prevent Mauris being supplied with liquor for conveyance to their pas, Constable Taylor had occasion tn airest a Maori, who, it is alleged, bad been handed a bottle of beer in the street by a white man. After a struggle Constable Taylor got his captive to the vicinity of the police station, but a large number of other Maoris then rushed up eager to rescue their colleague. The disturbance attracted the attention ot certain pakeha citizens, who went to the Constable's asistance, and in the conflict some of the white men were the recipient! of htrd blows. Proceedings at the Pukekobe Magistrate's Ccurt on Thursday next will be the seqael.

DR CHEESMAN FAKEWELLED. A social evening was held in the Tuakau hotel on Thursday last, the gathering being promoted by friends of Dr Cheesman for the purpose of wishing him "good-bye" before he left for Trentham, to take up medical duties in camp.

Mr Dynes Fulton, chairman of the Town Board, presided. Toasts honoured were:—"The King"; "The Allied Forces," proposed by Mr Free and leplied to by Mr Tapper; "Our Boys at the Front," prupostd ty Mi J. Pirret, and responded to in a fine and touching speech b? Mr Cole; "Our Guest," was submitted by the chairman, who made mention of the high eßteeiA in which Dr Cheesman was held by the residents and expressed tha regret felt at bis departure. f Avdantage was taken of the occasion to present the Doctor with a case of pipes. --- Dr Cheesman suitably responded.; J^The toast of "The Ladies," propos.d by Mr Henderson and replied to by Mr Clarke, "the GovernmsLt" proposed by Mr Crawford ard replied to by Mr Hill, "Our Host and Ho3te«a" (Mr and Mrs Stewart) proposed by Mr Craig and replied to by Mr Stewart, were als) honoured.

Songs were rendered during tbe evening by Messrs Steveneor, Reid, Clarke and Pirret, and a recitation was given by Mr Joseph Fultoo. The muisc was provided by Messrs Stevenson and Tapper.
