PUKEKOHE DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

Annual Meeting.

The above Society held its annual meeting on Saturday last, Dr C. U. Wake presiding. Other members present included Mrs J. M. Baxter, Mrs W. Towneon, Mrs A. Urigor, and Messrs J. B. Brown, J. Patterson, F. Hubbard, A. B. Barter, A. Urigor, E. Allan and the secretary, Mr F. E. Simpson. The president gave a detailed account of the year's workings. He claimed that the Society had had to contend with two very serious obstacles, viz., first, the effects of a bad season, and, secondly, the effects of the war. Ths attendances at the first show tutftred because it was held tno close to Christmas Day, a number of purple who would have otherwise attended beit.g out of the district. The Autumn Show, however, went off satisfactorily, but there was a marked falling off in come of the sections, as compared with the pnvious year's totals, Such was most noticeable in the needlework a'CMon, which had decreased in entries bv 100. The Society hid suffered a severe loss in the dsnarture from the district of two very active member ■; Mr Diiver aud Mr Eames. Mr Simpson was relinquishing ths duties of ta-y. It was unfortunate for the Society, as Mr Simpson hRd worked in a manner which clearly demonseated that be had the interests of the Society at beart.

The balance sheet showed that the Society was in e'ebt to the extent of £4 4s lid.

In proposing the adoption ci' the balance shee r , Mr Allan stated that atbough the Society had do actual cash it was very satisfactory to know ttat they could carry on with less expense in the future than in the past. Mr Bruwn seconded.

In accordance with a notice ol' motion given at the previous annual meeting, Mr Allan moved that steps shauld be taken to add to the list of officers as mentioned in the by-laws, viz., vicc-piit'oris.

F. Dearie, auditor. TO IMPROVE GARDENS. With a view of improving gardens in the district, Dr Wake suggested that the Society Bhould cit'er a prize for tne beEt kept garden by one ma".

Mr Brown was inclined to think that a competition for gardens kept by men wouli rot be successful.

Mr Allan intimated that h 3 had suggested a similar competition when the Society was first formed, but the idea was dropped owing to the Suciety b£iuat without funds. The Auckland Horticultural SccEity had inaugurated a competition for school children, the prize for which was a banner wLich bad, to be won three years in succession before it could be won outright. All th° schools were competing in the competition. On a further suggestion of Dr Wake that a beautifying Society should be fo-med, the garden scheme was dropped. DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVES.

The following committee were appointed to represent the Society in their respective district 0 , viz.: Mrs Sharp, Rama Rama; Mr Dicker.s and Mr Collins, junr., 'luakau; Mrs Moore a r .d Mrs Logan, Onewhero; Mrs Taylor, Puni; and Mr Lippiatt, Poker o. MISCELLANEOUS. It was decided to renew the annual subscribtion tu the National Sweet Pea Society. Mr Allan proposed thai a beatty vote of thanks be accouLd the president for the very able manner in which he had overcome the numerous anxitties and difficulties which had arisen during the year. The motion was carrie;! with acclamation.
