ON ACTIVE SERVICE.
Pukekohe " Boy's " Experiences. Sergeant Roy Schotield, wellknown in Pukekohe and now with the 3rd Auckland Mounted Regiment attached to the Main New Zealand Expeditionary Force, writing from Egypt on the 25th April to a friend in Pukekohe, stated that the last of the infantry sections had left for the Daidanelleß. The men who remained nehind were as "hapry as larks" Lut were anxious to get in alongside their comrades against the Turks.
Under date of April 27th he mentiuned that Private Hacker, of Pukekohe, cne oU his previous tent mates, hsd been kiled in action. Writing on May 2nd he Barplies information vriih reference to w unded New who had returned to Egypt The Auekla.:ders ar.d the 16th Haurakis lared badly in the engaegments. They were the first "on the scene" and were ordered to clamper up a cliff lined with Turks, who opened fire on them with machine guns and rifles, but 'despite that the "boys" gained their object, along with the Au'trali-nss. The war cry of the New Ze.landere and Australians as they charged the Turks was " Yalle. " (go awayj and "lnshes" Uel oat). The Austral an were very kee.i fighters. A party of New Z alanders came on a memb:r ot an Australian Keigrrunt who had driven his bayonet through a Turk and was trying to ward off four other Turks witi the butt of the rifle.
Under date of May Pth, Serjeant Schofield states that the mountedrnen were leaving for the Dardanelles. The ne-\ h 3 s .id, were eager to get a "look in" at ths Turks. It was quite a new sensßiion the idea of having for action, instead of wandering about in the sun and sand.
