BUCKLAND.
PARLIAMENTARY UNION
The second meeting of th° Parliamentary Union whs hi Id in the Buckland Hall on Wednesday evening last. The Government, Opposition and Independent Benches were filled, and judgirg by the crowd of visitors and their enthusiasm Tie mfetings will be popular, ard will be looked forward to in anticipation of social and amusing evenings.
Proceedings opened with the singing of the National Ai,them. Tha Acting-Governor, Sir Frederick S<ut?r, read his Speech, ard judgirg by its contents tht Government have some stiff work in front of them.
The first business was the election of the speaker. Mr H. H. U. Wily being appointed. Some very amusing questions were put to the Ministers, who considering their new positions met them with satisfactory answers.
The Po3tmaster-Gnera', tha Hon. A. P. Horn-, was asked as to wh.n the district was going to have a post office. He replied: "In th2 sweet bye and bye." He, however, promised delivery of mail by airship in the-future.
The Hon. Jeli'erie, Minister fur Marine, promised to stock the Buckland stream with trout.
HOSPITAL SHIP FUND,
A large and representative meeting was held in the Buckland Hall on Wedneedsy evening, June 2nd, in aid of the Hospital Sh'p Fuad. The meetirg was must enthusiastic. Addresses were delivered by Messrs E Allan, 0. G Avery, A. P. Home, and Mrs H. H. D. Wily, interspersed with songy. The chairman, Mr E. A liar, spoke n feeling terms of the s"d less the cistrict had sustained in the e'eath of Captain A. E. Liluck, lulled in action, and a resolution of sympathy with his relatives wa3 carried in silencr, the audience standing. Mention was also made of Private Ben de Vries, whose name recently appeared among the-mounded, and the hopa was expre-eed that he was by this time well or. the way to recovery. A resolution of good cheer and sympathy with "our boys" at the front was carried amid hearty applause. Ihe request for funds in aid of the Hospital Ship brought forth a hearty respunse, the sum of £73 18s being subscribed. AppencleJ are the names of those who subscribed : W. J. Jeii'eris. The latest batch accepted bv the Defence Departments as mc-mbers of New Zealand Reinforcements, to leave at future dates, includes Dt A. H. j Chessman (medical corps), J. j Kercher, Ciark, W. Pirret and E. i Cruickshank. ; The Ladies' Hospital Ship Fund | Committee are holding a gift social in the Public Hall to-morrow (Wednesday) evening. Ths programme will ccnsist of items varied and quaint. Apart from the enjoyment to bi derived from the entertainment, the punilic are reminded of the worthy cause. Admission will | be by gift of value of not less than one shilling. 'I he local Patriotic Fund Committee met on Friday night last, when Mr A. H. Tapper reported that he had collected £23 6s and bad been ' ) piomifcd an additional £l7. Mr j j Dynes Fulton and Mr J. Henderson ; were appointed to make a house to house canvass of the district i'cr funds. ! I The works are being carried out as j the result of a report submitted by I the Works Committee after making a j tour of the district. - CLEVEDON. KILLED IN ACTION. "THE FIRST 'lO FALL." "Killed in action" was the sad I news contained in a despatch re- ! ceiveii by Mr J. A. Munro on | Friday l ast - 1( referred to his son I Robert William, a member of the I mounted detachment of the Main ; New Zealand Expeditionary Force. ; Later news shows that the deceased : was killed at the Dardanelles, and I i is the first Clevedoo boy to inscribe , j his name on the Roll of Honour. The , news quickly spread through the i district, regret being cxprested on j every hand. Deceased was born in . the district and had grown up and , hved here all his hie. He was i distinctly' popular and made many 1 friends; expressions of sympathy , being received by the members of
his family fiom all quarters of the district.
Deceased was only just 21 years of a*e having CFlehrmed fhia twenty-first binhday in Egpyt. He was a prominent member of the local Rugby Fotball Club and Tennis Club. As a footballer he was particularly successful. From the time when ha was a boy he was selected in Bchool representative teams, and later was included amongst the Manukau Rugby Unioi's representative?. He was in pssecsion of numerous "rep." caps. A memorial service for deceased was held in the All Souls' Anglican Church on Sunday, when the Rev. Wcods delivered an impressive discourse to a large congregation At the Wairoa Road Board meeting yesterday kindly referene s were made ti deceased, and it was decided that the Board's sympathy should be conveyed to Mr and Mrs Munro and family.
The usual monthly meeting of the Wairoa Board was held yesterdav. A report of same will appear in our next issue.
An instructive speech en the advantages derived by supplying crfam to co-operative dairy companies over farmers who are supplying to proprietary concerns was made by Mr W. Goodfellow, managing director of the Waikato Co operative Dairy Company, Ltd., tj a large audience in the Public Hall list week. In outlining the growth of his company, Mr Goodfellow maintained that those who supplied the local factory with cream, during the past season, had received 2d per lb less than the farmer who supplied cream to the Waikato Cooperative Dairy Company for the same period. In anticipation of arriving at an arrangement to supply their cream in future to Mr Goodfellow's company, it was unanimously decided to hold a further meeting in a week's time, to go into the matter.

INVALIDED HOME
Private Bert Claike, of the Waikato Detachment of the mam body of the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces, who was wounded in the fighting at the Suez Canal, and later spent thirteen wejks in hospital with pneumonia, alongside tha late Frank Feather, of Tuakau, arrived hom?, invalided, at Pukekawa, laßt week. After recouping he will leave with reinforcements tj join his company. He four.d life on board the transport, on the voyage from New Zealand, pleasant. He did not hear of any complaints being made by the men; in fact, they were more than agreeably surprised with the accommodation arid the food. With reference to the iiahtirg at the Suez Canal, be said it was a pleasure to witness the Indian?, whom he termed as brilliant fighters, and the Ghurka Regiment, who were even better fighters, standing the brunt of the attack. The New Zealanders, he said, marvelkd at these highly trained and efficient soldiers when in actioD.
