KARAKA ROAD BOARD.

Monthly Meeting. The usual monthly meeting ot the above authority was held on Saturday last, the members present being: Messrs J. Batty, chairman, R. Schlaepfer, G. C. Sutton, J. MacPberson, J. P. Kidd ana the clerk, Mr H. C-lasson. AN UNFINISHED DRAIN. A letter was received from Mr F. A. Awdry, the contractor for the Waiau-Papskura road drain, who bad been requested by the Board to pro* ceed with his contract, which at the time of the previous mee'ing of the Board was unfinished. He stated that his inability to proceed with the drain was caused through an accident to himself, which happened while he was working for the Board.—An application was also made by Mrs Awdry, 01 behalf of Mr Awdry, for a fortnight's half psy.

The chairman stated that he bad discussed the claim for compensation with Mr Awdry and mide it clear to him that he could not expect to receive such from the Board. HBd Mr Awdry notified him in due time he would have reported the accident to the Insurance Com ppany, but it was then too late to act in the matter.

In reference to the claim, it was decided to suggest to Mr Awdry that he should forward a claim for compensation to the Ineurance Company. Thi chaitman was empowered lo arrange with Mr Awdpy to proceed with the drain and to pav him when the contract was finished to the chairman's satisfaction. FOOI BRIDGE WANTED. The chairman mentioned that a ratepayer had complained to him of a dan?errus railway crossing known ai Crawford's railway crossing, on the main Paerati road, near the Karaka read, and bad suggested that the Board should make application to the Railway Department for a bridge in place of the crossing.

Mr Sutton knew the crossing and agreed tbat the ratepayer had cause for complaint.

It was decided that the chairman and Mr Schlaepfer interview the District Engineer with a view of applying for a bridge to be erected at the cro-sing. CLOSING AND FORMING OF ROADS.

As lh3 road situated between Messrs Urquhart Brjs,' and J. Hartland's properties was not being used, and as there was a road running parallel tD it which was in use, it was decided to close the road.

Owiog to the unsuitability of the road, as laiJ off by the Government, it was decided to c!:se it and to make a ruad through Mr Glasson'a property as an approach to the Whangamaire creek bridge.

It was further decided that the clerk should take the necessary steps to closs a road through sections 126 and 129, Karaka district. MAGFHEKSON'S BRIDUrJ. In view of the Franklin County Council failing to take action in connection with the proposed erection of a concrete bridge, to take the place of the wooden structure of Ma:Pherson'B bridge, for which the Government promised a £6OO £ for £ subsidy, it was decided to call the Council's attention to the non-compliance of their promise re the proposed bridge, made at a meeting of the Council when a deputation from the Karaka district waited on the Council some ten months back, and to state tbat the Karaka Rnad Board were agreeable that the rates collected by the Franklin County Council over the Karaka district should be taken tor the £ for £ subsidy. STRIKING A RATE.

Mr Sutton gave notice of motion that he would ptopose at the following meeting of the Board that tbe General Rate for the ensuing year should be three-farthinga in the £.

ROAD WORK,

Messrs Sutton and Schlaepfer were deputed to arrange for the laying down of scoria blocks and metal on that part of the road between the station gate and Mr Jamieson's gate, at Paerata. OUTSTANDING RATES.

As a large percentage of late money remained unpaid and there was a possibility of the Board losing the 15 per cent Government subsidy attached to rates paid before 31st inst., it was proposed that ttflf"* names of six of the largest rajlpayers whose rates were outstanding should be placed in a hat and three drawn, the hitter to b; summonsed with a view of trying to bring force on the other ratepayers whose rates were unpaid to pay same.—Action was taken accordingly. RAILWAY AGREEMENT SETTLED. ~ The clerk was authorised to affix the seal of the Board tu an agreement re the Paerata railway crossing. MEETING DATES. An alteration in the meeting day of the B aard, from the third Saturday in the month to the second Saturday, at L3O p.m., was decided on. REPORTS. The chairman reported that tho Black Bnd Walker bridges had been repaired and that tome of the culverts in the district had been attended tu. Tha ; a fair amount of metal had crushed with the Board's mistier at Runciman for tbe No. 1 ward. That th: measurement of t'ie metal crushed by Mr Ferguson, on the road, went to show that Mr Barraclougn's previous measurements on behalf of the board, which had been disputed by Mr Ferguson, wen practically correct. Mr Sutton reported that on inspecting that portion of the Runciman - Paerata road, where water had been lying, he decided id preferance to grading the to lay down 35 pipes. '"""'
