A continuation of the report of last week's meeting of the Franklin County Council appears on page 1 of this issue. An important sale t .of household furniture at the residence of Mr G. Smith, of Gibson road, Tuakau, is advertised to be held on Saturday next. A lengthy cause list awaits the Magistrate for the fortnightly Court to be held in Pukekohe on Thursday next, several police and civil cases being down for hearing. Mr and Mrs James Houlston were passengers by the s.b. Naigara, which arrived in Auckland yesterday, on their return to Pukekohe after a holiday spent in Sydney. The timber (sheds, posts, etc.) of the New Zealand Loan Company's old saleyards in Pukekohe is to be submitted to public auction on Friday next. For particulars see advt.

Mr F. E. Simpson, hon. secretary of the Pukekohe District Horticultural Society, notifies winners at the recent flower show that prizes may now be obtained from him, and if not claimed by June Ist the same will revert to the Society. A meeting of the Pukekohe orancb of the New Zealand Farmers' Union is to be held on Friday evening next in the Borough Council Chambers for the purpose of considering the remits down for discussion at the forthcoming annual conference.

"A working bee" has been promoted for Monday next by the Franklin A. ard P. Society for the purpose of removing the Society's plant from the old to the new showground. The assistance of members and sympathisers is solicited. The first instalment of a series of summonses by the Franklin County Council in respect of arrears of rates to ba dealt with at the Magistrate's Court on June 17th is advertised in this issue, and addi tional similar notices will appear in subsequent igsues. The cases concern what are known as "absentee" owners.

The following resolution was passed at the meeting on Thursday last of the Franklin County Council, viz : "1 hat this Council expresses its sense of horror at the action of the Germans in sinking the s.s. Lositania with the shocking loss of life and ceaires to tender its sincere sympathy to the relatives of those who lost their lives in this most diabolical outrage."

Mr J. H. T. Pickard, whose next of kin is Mr G. Pickard, of Waiuku, is reported by the Defence Department as having died from wounds received in the Dardanelles operations. In recent lists of wounded appear the names of Corporal A. H. Whittaker, son of Mrs Whittaker, ofPapakura; Private K. McLean, brother of Mr 0. McLean, of Pukekohe; Private Albert E. Robinson, next of kin Mr A. E. Robinson, of Patumhoe; Private A. E. St. George Long, late of the "Pukekohe Times" office; and Private W. J. Mclntoih, son of Mr J. Mcintosh, of Pukekohe. A meeting of local businessmen was held yesterday when the provisional committee reported as to arrangements made re the appointment of a night-watchman for Pukekohe. It was agreed that levies should be collected monthly in advance and Messrs Comrie, Roadley, Lawrie and Perkins were authorised to act as an executive committee on behalf of the subscribers. Arrangeuenis were made for the watchman to be insured under the Employers' Liability Act and for him to be enrolled as a special constable.
