Two Lanky Germans
SURPRISING THE LANCASHIRE LADS.
Two Lancashire lads' who had enlisted in a cavalry regiment were drafted to the Front at the commencement of the war. One day they were on outpost duty when the officer in command sent them, togther with several others, to reconnoitre, each man taking a different direction.
Now, the day previous there had been very heavy fighting on the very ground that they were scouting, so that when our Oldham hero saw a German helmet lyngi behind a hedge he was struck with a bright idea. Putting his great-coat on and the Prussian head-gear he thought he would be able to disclose the enemy's' whereabouts without himself being detected, especially as it was getting dusk.
He had not got very far, however, when a shot rang out only a short distance away. He dropped behind a hillock, and fired back in the direction of this shot, and then the sniping started in earnest. For a few moments they fired at each other without any success. It happened that they were within shouting distance, and our Oldhamite could not resist bawling out: — "I'll get one o'er on thi yet, owd mon!" You may guess his surprise when the reply was : "Ay, if aw dunno get thee fust, tha bloomin' owd German!"
