DISTRICT NEWS.
WAIUKU.
The value of a ilttle attention being given to public requirements by responsible local inteitutions has been forcibly demonstrated locally during the past few months. In this connection the Chamber of Commerce has been very energetic ana has secured substantial benefits, whilst the Town Board has also done creditable woik. But there is one matter upon which the former institution has obtained ample promise of redress from the responsible aulhonties, but trie realisation thereof is aa vague as ever. We refer to the long-prorated extra telephone wire via Drury, which would considerably improve our service with tbe city of Auckland. Ihe excuse for non-fulfilment of the scheme is generally the lack of telegraph poles. In the meantime, however, quite a number must have grown since the proposal was first mooted, and if shoots had been planted along the route it is probable by ibis time they would have been ready for carrying the wire. What we wish to see uow is combined action on tbe Dart of the two bodies in urging the work to be done without delay. It is quite reasonable to assume that the district is entitled to a quicker and more efficient service, or such would not have been promised. The Departmental Minister and our district member should both be urged to give this qu:stioa the necessary attention to ensure an early installation.
Mr and Mrs T. D. Reid, of Glenbrook, who have been, on a visit to the Home Country, returnod to Waiuku last week.
The successful tenderer for alterations and additions at the Kentish Hotel was Mr \V, Michie. Several of the tenders were very close to the ono aeceptod.
The trustees of Waiuku Hall have decided to get compatitive designs for the erection of a now hall, and it is boped to shortly have a scheme uuder way for the realisation of this project.
It is proposed to establish three beds at the base hospital at Trentham for Aucklanders. Seeing that this district has sent forward such a largo number of active service men it is intended to try and raise funds for one bed in Waiuku district. A concert is contemplated.
The recent conditions of the roadway fronting the Post Office suggests a very disagreeable position during the coming winter unless the Town Board can supply a lot of metal to remedy matters. The place was a regular bog all last winter and it has had practically no attention since. The Rev. J. A. Cable, who has resigned from his position in con- * nection with the Wesley Church, Waiuku, was tendered a complimentary social last evening and was the recipient of a handsome parting gift as a token of the esteem in which he is held.
Messrs Kossiter and Mason, chairman and secretary respectively of the Chamber of Corurnorco, which has complained to the Telegraph Department about telephone poles being on the roadway out Waipipi way, paid a visit to the locality on Tuesday in compauy with Mr Condon, representative of the Department. As the result it is expected to have the danger complained of remedied.
Although the recent rams arrested the decreasing milk and cream supplies at the district receiving depots it is too late to expect any marked move in the upward direction. In instance*, however, a welcome increase has been repoited, but littlo more thou a prolonging of tho season of profit can be reasonably oxpectod. The effect of this alone on the season's returns should nevertheless prove considerable.
There was a good attendance of representative townsmen and settlers at the funoral of Mrs Isabella Hull (widow of the late John liuJl), which took plaeo at the Waiuku cemetery last Thursday. The deceased lady, and her late husband, were among the early settlers of tho district, and for many years resided ou the border of the Aka Aka plain. Slio has lived in Waiuku with two of her daughters for some time past and had enjoyed fairly good hoalth. On Wednesday of last weok tho deceased lady had a sudden attack of illness to which she succumbed. A large family of grown-up sons and daughters are left to mourn their loss, in which they have widespread sympathy.
