NEUTRAL PILLAR-BOX.
] AN AMUSING OFFER. I Frotr. a source I hove every reason to believe authentic, I learn the following curious story (writes the Boulogne correspondent of the London i "Daily Telegraph"). I In a little village near the military centre of a soldier found a little tin letter-box, which he took into the inst (line ..trenches. Finding little to I amuse him, early one morning he left | his trench, and, with the letter-box unI der his arm, advanced towards the ! enemy's trenches. The Germans did not fire. Arriving half-way between the ': two sets of "trenches, he perched his box, and slowly returned to his position. . J As if by arrangement, each side crossed fire once daily, during which intervals first a French soldier would go to i the box and place there his own and bis comrades' correspondence " for the ' enemy." Then a German would fetch these" letters and leave others for the ■ French. Kvery day the letters afforded a great deal of amusing reading. ; Fach side described the perfection of 'its own situation, the excellence of its communiques, the confidence in its own generals, iind the number of its victoc- . One (lav n soldier thought of an excellent plan. "Wo have been proniis■ed," lie'wrote, "£2 for every German ! that we make prisoner. It is an ex- ' ceedingly useful sun:. Well, dear 1 eneniv, 1 have a proposition to make: Give'yourselves up to i.is, and we will j'ivo "you com mission—one that will i make vou jump—so per cent. Tlierefnre, those of vou who have enough inj teiiigence to quit the Kaiser's service ' will finish up the campaign in the most ! comfortable tun in—far better than bej ire- in the trendies. Enjoy yourselves! [Take this opportunity, and, with 2of. j commission in your pocket, you will ' have nothing to worry about. Twentyfive francs is sufficient for thousands ot I eiearoltes and lots of beer!" | ] am told that next night only one man was left in the German trenches—l and he was dead.
