"Now, what is that?" he .asked, but there was nit a reply from the whole class. "Well, give me another rumb:r," said the inspector. "69," answered Mary with the little lamb, and the inspector wrote on the hoard "1)6." "What is tnatr" he asked again, but once more there was no answer? "Well, well," he scliioquised, "I will ask ycu for just one more number. Will anybody give me one?" There was a long pause. "Will anbyody give me one, I say' ? " he repeated, and a little girl ;vith a brandy-ball stain about her mounth held up a sticky toffee linger. "1 will fir," she lisped. "Well, what is it?" enquired the inspector. "77, and you can't meek that about."
