DRURY.

When the business people of this town receive merchandise from Auckland I notice that the name is abbreviated to "DRY." A better title could not be chosen if we look back upon the last eight months, for verily we are living in a dry district. When we have a light sh'nvei fall, along comes the wind, and with the aid of the sun it is so soon licked up again that hut little good results. The farmers view the coining winter with some alarm, and if we do not soon have copious show-. ers it will go hard with stock for tho fodder will he scarce. A concert in aid of the hall took place last Friday, and Mas fairly well patronised Tho talent came up hy motor car from Auckland, and some very good items were rendered, to an orderly and appreciative audience. j Here lei me pat the Drury people on tho hack. 1 think tho most orderly audiences ever 1 saw are those of Drury. There are no hoodlums, or if there are they behave in an exemplary manner whou at any Junction. I notice our ahead coachbuilders tunc several largo waggons uoaring a state of completion, and they arc being kept fairly busy despite the drought and 'the war. Our Bible i lasses aro live institutions, and the members are enthiiMastic. Foi the session jutL started Mr Johustou is leader, and Mr K. Bycroft secretary of tho Young Men\ Class ; Miss Johustou leader | and Miss McNaughtou secretary of j the youiig women's class. Mr Jos. | Brookti rocoivod from theih last j Tuesday a haudsuwo pioseut of a ! gentleman's companion and a hearty I send olt accompanied by the kind I wishes of all. Mr Stituson, late ! secretary, v. ho has removed to Te \ Kuiti, also came in for laudatory n-nidik. auJ a geutleuiau's tom- | paniun. Ihu presents were mado j by Mr W. Duon, ou behalf of the combined classes.
