SPORTS GATHERING. Held on Wednesday last, in Mr J. Cumminga paddock, in a spell of glorious sunshine, with a light north west nreeza blowing across the fields, the fifth annual sports gathering of the Onewhero Athletic Club proved a most successful gathering. The attendance was somewhat below that ot previous years, but nevertheless the various entries foi th 3 various events were quita up to the stardard, and in the most important events, as a result of the handicapping, there was very little to chuose between the competitors, who spoke in high terrrs of the treatment meted out to tham by the Club's officials during the day. In the race for the Onewhero Cip, 220 yards handicap, 1.. Logan reacfied the tape first, a few inches in front of R. J. Wa'son, who in turn beat a native, Remu, for third pla<;e. In the High Jump the keenness of the competitors and the excitement of a number of native spectators made the item interesting, and it took quite a considerable time before the ten competitors who hud enteted for the event dwindled down to two. Taua won with Short second. The Pace Race Compaction tor boys mounted on ponies, was another event that was competed for by a large field, no less than eight boys taking part. Mr C. Walters adjudicated, and awarded lirst place to Master Andrews and secor.d place to Master Ivan Cathcait.
E. Abbott was particularly successful in the four mounted events that he participated in, winning handsomely in each case. The executive, consisting ot Messrs E. J. Attewell secretary, Bark and Logan judges, M. J. Logan starter, J. Cathcart, J. Cummings, and C. Lindberg handicappers, W. Keys and G. V. Brooks gatekeepers, are deserving of special praise for the manner in which they surmounted the numerous difficulties of the day. The club is fortunate in having as its secretaryMr E. J.
