Sports Meeting.
The second annual sportß meeting of the Pukekawa Club were held in Mr McDougall's paddock, Pukekawa, on Saturday last, under weather conditions that bordered on perfection.
The large attendance that was present went to show that the club ha%>made wonderful progress since its intitial effort a year ago.
Before the sports started a large number of visitors nad arrived on the ground from Mercer and Tuakau ex vehicles and by launches via the beautiful Waikato river. D. Pretty, ex-world's champion axeman, gave a highly creditable performance in the open chop event, ]2in blocks. Starting from five seconds behind scratch and allowing 25 seconds start he finished second amidst tremendous applause from the numerous spectators who had congregated to witnes3 what proved to be one of the finest chopping performances seen on the ground, In the Pukekawa Cup, 220 yds, J. O'Connell won by inches from a field of eleven competitors. Mr P. McSheen's veteran Kruger (24 years of age) was awarded first place in the hunters' competition. He was ridden by E. Abbott. Kruger is a faultless jumper and without a blemish. Same years ago he tied with a horse named Baritone for first place in a steeplechase race at an Auckland Racing' Club's meeting.
Side shows were numerous and the owners did guod business with the natives, who were iu large attendauce. Mr Harris,' of Pukekawa, had charge of the light refreshment stall and the hot water arrangements. The ground is situated high above the river level and with a patch of native bush, that afforded shelter during luncheon time, adapted itself admirably for a sports ground.
