A young lawyer was defending an old convict on the charge of burglary in one of the American States, where the court rules allow each side one hour u» address the jury. An Irish recruiting sergeant had been exhorting the crowd at a foothall match on the necessity of joining the army, and joining at once, and wound up with, "Everv divil of ye is wanted, as Hamblet says: List, 0 list!" •■Ah. but sargent," piped a timid listener ."some of us don't want to go abroad." The siege was raised forwith, and Mao-tun was removed out of the zone of temptation by his apprehensive spouse.
