CAPTAIN SCOTT'S WORK.
A monument to the Into Captain Scott was unveiled recently at Finse, Norway, by Dr. Skattum, vice-president of the Geographical Society. In a speech ])r. Skattum paid a tribute to the "death march" of Captain Scott and his comrades, whom he described as the highest display of moral force and the. uttermost effort of physical and mental energy. Croat Britain, he said, stood' foremost in polar exploration. "May this lofty monument," concluded T)r. Skattum, "stand through time as the symbol of the noble characters, strong wills, and high ideals of theseheroes." A LIFE SAVED BY A PRAYER BOOK. A DRUMMER'S THANKSOFFERA petition has recently boon presented to £TTe Consistory Court of London, by the vicar and churchwardens 1 of St. George's Old Brentford, asking for a faculty to authorise the fixing of an oak box with a plate-glass front, on the wall of the church, to hold a prayerbook and the feather bag in which it was kept in itio pocket of Drummer George Charles Kdward Court, and the bullet by which it was struck at the BattTe of the T»larne. \\ iien Drummer Court, who belongs to the Ist Middlesex Regimen?, was leaving for the front, his fiancee, on bidding "him good-bye, gave him a small prayer-book, and asked" him to carry it in hi- TTTt breast pocket. At the Battle of the Maine, Drummer Court, finding . that the prayer-book seemed to press ( too heavily on the clasp of his braces, transferred it to his left trousers pocket. Shortly afterwards shrapnel burst near, lulling six men and wounding 14. Drummer Court, who was unhurt., afterwards discovered a hole in his trousers, and found that the ivory back of the prayer-book was torn, while at the Im'Toin of a little leather bag, in which the prayer-hook was kept, lay a bullet. As a thanksoffering for his preservation, the drummer desired to present the prayer-book, together with the damaged leather li;.g and the bullet, to lie kept in St. George's Church, Old Brentford, for all time. The faculty asked for was granted.
