KARAKA ROAD BOARD.

Monthly Meeting.

The usual monthly meeting of the Karaka Road Board was held on Saturday lasr, the following members being present Messrs J. Batty (chairman", R. J. Johnston, R. Glasson, J. Schlaepfer, and the clerk, Mr H. Glasson. DEVIATION OF A ROAD.

Mr J. Hartland, Buckland, owner of section 13 Kiiraka, wrote stating that the Boa> d had sone time past decide 1 <o grant him two pieces of road which divided his property, in exchange f<>r a pieco cut off ins property by iln deviation of the road, a payment of £3, to be made by him to defray the <• jst of the work, if it reached that amount. He desired to hear that the Board would attend to the matter without delay. The clerk said that he had been in conversation with Mr Vickorman of the Public Works Depirtment, who had informed him that if the road mentioned had not been dedicated it could be closed under the Lands Act and if it had been dedicated it would have to be under the Public Works Act. Mr Batty was under the impression the road had been surveyed.

The clerk was instructs to attend to the closing of the road, and to see that Mr Hartland duly received the two pieces of road mentioned in his letter. LOAN MONEY SECUKED.

The chairman said it gave him pleasure to notify members that the final payment of £IOOO, of the £6OOO loan for grading ana road improvement work, hsd been lodged to the credit of the Board in the Bank of New Zealand, Auckland, by the State Guaranteed Advances Office.

ABSENTEE OWNER'S PROPERTY An application was received from Mr J. 0. Andrews, Pukekohe, asking the Board to notify Mr G. Sncoks to clear the blackberries and rabbits off his propsrty at Paerata.

Mr Schlaepfer said that Mr Snooks was not living on the property, but he had noticed in the Pukekohe "limes" that Mr John Allen was acting on his behalf.

The clerk was instructed to write and ask Mr Allen to attend to the nuisance.

HINGAIA BRIDGE.

The chairman reported that Mr Friedtender had been good enough to advance money to meet progress paymects on work connected with Hingaia Bridge. He (Mr Batty) had also approached the contractor as to the work in connection with the filling in of the approaches to the bridges, and had been informed that it would be premature to go ahead with the work, as the contractor was not prepared to attend to it at present. NEW ROAD GRADER.

The chairman mentioned that the road grader, purchased at a cost of £9O, had been doing good work. NEW RAILWAY CROSSING. A letter was received from the District Railway Engineer in connection with tha laying down of the propused new railway crossing north of the railway station at Paerata, suggesting that the Board should provide the labour for the wnrk, subject to the Railway Department placing a man j'n charge to supervise. The cost of the work was estimated at £75, which would have to be borne by the Board. Mr Schlaepfer mentioned that as the new road would be going through his property he would like it fenced off before it was opened.

A discussion ensued as to the ability of the B:ard to immediately find the money for the work, but Mr Schlaepfer was of the opinion that must ot the rates would be paid by the end of March, and the chairman thought that if necessary the Kail way Department would accept the names of the Board members as guarantors for payment so that delay would be avoided. It was resolved that the Railway Department should be asked to proceed with the work on the terms sta'ed in the enigneer's letter. PLAN^.

It was decideci to engage «3r l.ockie Gannon to prepare plans for the proposed Karaka bank siding deviation, the Railway Department having made a request for the same.

ROAD REPAIRS.

The chairman was authorised to arrange for two trucks of shingle ! for the Drury-Waiuku road. Authority was given Mr Schlaepfer to arrange for three trucks of metal for the hill between Station road and Ellis' corner, Paerata. 'lhe chairman and Mr Johnston were empowered to order scoria for the Runciman-Paerata road. The clerk was instructed to order drain pipes for surface water improvements in the vicinity of tha railway cottages at Paerata, and, further, to arrange for the cleaning of Lindsay's road drain. It was decided to call for tenders for the crushing of 100 yards ot metal at Jameson's quarrv, DruryWaiuku road, and for the carting of 400 yards metal from the quarry on to the Drury-Waiuku road, and for the carting and crushing of 400 yards of metal at the quarry, the metal to be carted on to the DrurvWaiuku road between Mr May's property and the school on the same road.

Mr Batty was authorised io deal with the tenders. SUPERVISOR'S RESIGNATION. Mr Bond, supervisor of work to the Board tendered his resignation. The chairman said he was sorry to have to accept Mr Bond's resignation, and proposed that it be recorded on the minutes that the Board accepted the resignation with regret. —Carried.
