THE BUILDING TRADE.

The building trade locally is still fairly brisk, although several joba have been recently completed. Among other work a new house is undergoing the finishing touches for Mr Chas. Barriball, and a new workshop has been finished of! for Mr Thompson. A residence has been started in the main street, town Bide of the school, for Mr Hood; and the erection of another residence has been taken in hand by Mr D. J. Rowe for Mr Joe Barriball at the rear of Dr Howden'a sections. Several other purchasers of sections in this locality contemplate building substantia) houses in the near future. A substantial enlargement of Wallace and Co.'s business premises is now proceeding, which will provide] a new shop frontage to Bowen Btreet, and will be a considerable improvement to the premises and the locality when completed. Additions are also in progress at the rear of W. S. McConnell's premises to provide more storage accommodation. Extensive alterations and improvements have just been effected at Mr E. J. Green's business premises. A new room has been added on the Church street side, formerly naed for storage, and the former window sashea have been replaced by three large windows of plate glass. The new room is used for the mercery department, and has a special entrance from Church street, which is also part of the scheme of improvements. The verandah has been extended the full length of the building, and with three fine windows of plate glasp, give the premises a far more imposing appearance than formerly. The enterprise of the proprietor of the building, Mr J. Gribble, in having the work carried out is very commeudable.

PROGRESSIVE INSTALLATIONS. One of our progressive townsmen, Mr Jas. Gribble, has made a notable move in regard to ensuring the best of sanitary conditions for his Waiuku property. At the Central Private Hotel he has had a septic tank built, and has installed the most modarn lavatory, drainage and sanitary arrangements. By a system of storage tanks and pumping engine he secures a splendid water supply, which is also available for his own residence. At the latter he has also had a septic tank constructed and similar up-to-date conveniences installed. The whole of the work has been effected so as to make a thorough job, and provides a reliable solution of the water and drainage question for his property. The work throughout is of an elaborate nature, and such enterprise is very commendable.
