GENERAL ELECTION.

"We nothing extenuate, nor net down aauht in malice."

Result Still in Doubt.

Yesterday's voting shows that owing to Absentees' and the Expeditionary Force votes still to be counted the actual strength of parties cannot yet be definitely recorded. Of the 70 European seats the Government have secured 38, the Opposition 30 and Labour 8, but the majorities for the Opposition representative in Wairarapa and for the Labour representatives in Wellington East and Duriedin Central (credited respectively in the foregoing figures are so narrow that it is yet probable that when the additional votes are counted the Government may secure one or more of the seats. Actual results in these instances are not likely to be available for two or three days. Voting for the four Maori members takes place to-day, three of the retiring Maoris being supporters of the Opposition and one (Dr Pomare) being a supporter of the Government.
